Thanks in advance for the words of wisdom! Last year we did a road trip from the sf bay area to yellowstone, then looped through oregon and back to sf We drove from i84 from idaho falls, id to baker city, or We spent the night at baker city at the geiser grand hotel

The geiser grand is a historic hotel and purported to be haunted. Much of yellowstone national park and this corner of idaho is a giant caldera The rivers, and the little road that we were on, wander across the plateau formed by the caldera Over time, the rivers cut canyons in the caldera and spill over falls at the caldera's edge

Back to yellowstone through the south entrance and exiting at the west entrance, then heading north to bozeman through the gallatin mountains We did stop for construction for 15 minutes or so, but otherwise traffic was great the whole way We stopped in yellowstone to wade in the fire hole river (again, nice and warm!), and also view geysers.
