With 16 goals and 19 assists senior Kyle Wimer led the Retrievers in points and extended his scoring streak to 31 straight games. Wimer moved into 15th place in UMBC history with 133 career points. He was one of just four unanimous selections for the All-AEC team.

Joining Wimer on the first team were three other seniors. Matt Latham earned his first first-team selection after being a second team pick the last two years. This year he led UMBC with 25 goals, 16 of which came in conference play. He has 86 career goals, and was second in the nation in shooting percentage, scoring 25 times in 47 shots (53.2%).

After struggling as a junior, Maxx Davis reinvented himself as a defensive midfielder and earned first team honors as a short stick midfielder. His 31 ground balls is second on the team but excelled on both sides of the ball with six goals and 7 assists. He scored three, including a game-winning overtime goal, against University of Vermont.

Matt Kresse has been an overshadowed defender for the majority of his career but has been one of the most consistent ones in the conference four four years. He has started 49 of 60 in his career and picked up 12 ground balls and caused six turnovers this year. Against University of Hartford he scored his first career goal off his first career shot.

On the second team was senior long-stick midfielder Mike Camardo, who was second in the nation with 2.91 per game. His totals of 47 ground balls and 35 caused turnovers both led the team. He also scored one goal and two assists as the defensive long-stick midfielders.

Midway through the season freshman Nick Doub was moved into the first midfield unit, replacing Bobby Stockton, who led the team with 12 goals after six games. His polished game and good passing ability kept him on the unit and he scored four goals and two assists as a freshman. Because of his efforts he was named to the AEC All-rookie team.

Finally, while on the field accomplishment are very impressive, Chris Jones earned his third straight selection to the AEC All-Academic team after maintaining a 3.45 GPA as an economics major. His four goals and one assist this year put him over the 50-point plateau for his career.

Wimer leads UMBC with 30 points off 12 goals and a team high 18 assists. He was a pre-season first team All-American by Inside Lacrosse and currently leads the nation with a 29 straight game scoring streak.

Camardo has had another outstanding season with 38 ground balls and 3.2 caused turnovers per game, which ranks second in the nation. Last season he was the AEC Championship Most Outstanding Player and a Second-Team All-AEC selection.

Men’s Ballot

On the women’s side of lacrosse, Erika Braerman and Kate Quick have been nominated for the Women’s Lacrosse Fan’s Choice Player of the Year award.

Braerman leads UMBC with 29 goals and 21 assists for 50 points. She is second in the AEC in points per game and third in assists. She currently ranks fifth all-time for most assists in a season.

Quick, the First-Team All-Conference goalie, leads the stingiest defense in the AEC, which ranks 14th in the nation with just an 8.79 goals-against average. So far this season she has recorded 106 saves, 34 ground balls, and 15 caused turnovers.

Women’s Ballot

Atwell was a preseason third-team All-American despite missing all of the 2009 season with a torn Anterior Cruciate Ligament, and said he felt 100 percent on the field in an interview with Alexander Pyles of examiner.com

Atwell played in the team’s first eight games, stayed home for the team’s trip to Binghamton, and officially left the team mid-week after that.

Coach Don Zimmerman declined to comment on Atwell’s decision to leave the team.

With the loss UMBC has fallen to 1-4, their worst start since 2005 when they started with the same record, and may have lost any chance of an at large big for the N.C.A.A. tournament.

Princeton was able to scored three goals in the first nine minutes of the game and UMBC was unable to recover. Chris McBride, Paul Barnes, and Scott MacKenzie each got a ball past sophomore Brian McCullough, who was making his second career start.

Sophomore Shane Ryzner was able to get UMBC on the board when he put in a pass from Maxx Davis with 5:29 remaining in the first quarter, but Princeton had two more goals added to their score but Jack McBride and Rob Engelke.

With the 5-1 deficit after the first quarter Coach Don Zimmerman decided to once again make a change in goal, replacing McCullough with senior Kevin Kohri, who started the season but was replaced at halftime by highly touted freshman Adam Cohen. McCullough recorded just one save against the Tigers.

Kohri did not fair much better though. He allowed two quick goals by Tony Moni and Engelke before UMBC could put together back-to-back goals for the first time in the game.

Sophomore attack Rob Grimm capitalized on a man-up situation one minute prior to long stick midfielder Mike Camardo scoring his first goal of the season.

Jack McBride was able to put one more goal away before the half with just five seconds remaining, sending UMBC into the break down 8-3.

The weather took it’s tole on both teams in the second half as only four goals were scored. MacKenzie scored his second goal of the game with 5:05 remaining in the third quarter to open the scoring in the second half prior to UMBC attack Matt Latham scoring his seventh goal of year off a pass from Kyle Wimer, who extended his consecutive game with a point streak to 24.

Mike Chanenchuk put one final goal on the board for Princeton with 15 seconds remaining in the third quarter to put UMBC down six with 15 minutes left in regulation.

UMBC was able to hold Princeton scoreless in the fourth quarter but only Wimer was able to net a goal as the team lost 10-5.

The Retrievers will have a week off before their next game, but they will once again have their hands fill playing their fourth straight nationally ranked team, #5 Maryland at 12:00 at UMBC Stadium. The game will be televised on ESPNU and WMAR.

Prior to the game McCullough had played just fewer than four minutes, all of which were last season. Against JHU he made eight saves but costly penalties and breakdowns from the senior laden defense left him vulnerable, as the Blue Jays slipped 16 goals past him.

But the goals allowed was a stat that Coach Don Zimmerman was interested in when assessing his performance.

“I thought he played very well,” Zimmerman said. “First start on Homewood field, he made some saves for us and cleared the ball well.

“What he’s been doing is practicing well; it’s not all what happens in a game. I want to see what Brian does in practice.”

For the first three games of the season the historically high powered offense struggled to get things going, but against JHU it was a different story, the offense played their best offense of the season for the first three and a half quarters of play before penalties and defensive breakdowns limited their opportunities.

“We started out strong,” said junior midfielder Bobby Stockton who recorded his third hat trick of the season. “We were sticking with them and everybody was playing hard and did their role.”

After falling behind by a quick goal by JHU, Stockton tied the game up less than two minutes later when he came around the goal for a quick shot on a man up situation.

JHU was able to get another goal just 14 seconds later after a break away after the face-off, but once again UMBC capitalized on their extra man opportunity when senior Matt Latham made a quick cut in from of the goal and put the shot in the upper right corner of the goal.

Kyle Wharton and Steven Boyle, who each recorded hat tricks in the game, as did Michael Kimmel who scored the opening goal for the Blue Jays, scored back-to-back goals for JHU to break the back and fourth scoring.

With just 48 seconds left in the first quarter Kyle Wimer made a dodge past a long stick defender right in front of the goal and made the over the top shot past the goalie to cut the UMBC deficit to just one after 15 minutes.

After more back to back scoring, UMBC final put together a three goal run in the third quarter, which started with a dropped save by Mike Gvozden while sophomore Shane Ryzner was there to clean it up and put it in the goal, followed by a shot by Stockton and a long pass up the field to Rob Grimm who scored on the one-on-one situation to get UMBC within just one goal of the Blue Jays.

But UMBC would score just one more goal after that point, while JHU found a way to score six times.

UMBC committed eight penalties in the game as JHU took advantage five times on extra man opportunities.

“It’s never good to get a penalty,” Stockton said. “We could have bounced back but it was unfortunate for us.”

After scoring just eight goals over the last two years while being stuck behind a bevy of talented midfielders, Stockton has stepped in with easy and has provided UMBC with a very powerful shot that has scored 11 times this season.

“I got to do my part as being a dodger too and me an Kyle sometimes dodge the long pole so we just have to find a way to work around and dodge shorties and get our match ups,” Stockton said.

Despite the poor fourth quarter, Zimmerman still saw this game as an improvement over his last three games.

“A loss is a loss and there are no moral victories but overall, looking at the big picture, our team made a nice step forward tonight.” Zimmerman said. “I was pleased we did a good job facing off, we did a good job with ground balls, clearing the ball, our man up got a lot better.”

Along with Stockton’s hat trick Jamie Kimbles and Rob Grimm each scored two goals. Kimbles has scored five goals in the last two games for UMBC.

On Saturday the Retrievers will have another big challenge as they will play No. 7 Princeton (3-0), who beat Johns Hopkins this season, in New Jersey.

The UMBC Retrievers men’s lacrosse team hosted the Villanova University Wildcats in their first home scrimmage of the 2010 season. This was a match-up of two top 20 teams from the closing polls of the 2009 season; UMBC ended last season ranked ninth in the USILA coaches poll and Villanove ranked 19th. But the 2010 season is underway and last year’s rankings are gone from the minds of these two teams.

After dealing with last year’s weaknesses and replacing the holes left by graduating seniors, the Retrievers came into this first home scrimmage of the year with many questions about their team. The biggest questions facing UMBC were about choosing a starting goalkeeper and improving on their worst-in-the-NCAA face-off percentage. It was apparent from the early moments of this exhibition that neither question would be answered.

The opening quarter set the tone for the rest of the game, as the Wildcats won the opening face-off and worked the ball with timely passing to put the first goal of the game on the board at the hands of Paul Mita. The UMBC defense tightened up as the quarter moved along, but the Villanova defense stayed strong as well. With only 15 seconds left in the first quarter the Wildcats struck again with their second goal.

Mita opened up the second quarter with another early goal before UMBC got on the score sheet with a goal by Matt Latham, who was assisted by Maxx Davis. This quarter would prove much more eventful; Mita scored his third goal for Villanova with just 12 minutes left in the quarter. The teams would trade goal for goal as both Bobby Stockton and Chris Jones recorded goals, with a Rob Grimm assist on the latter. UMBC went into the half trailing 5-3.

The third quarter proved to be another defensive battle, as each team only managed one goal each. Grimm was responsible for scoring the lone UMBC goal, giving him his second point of the game. After a quick Wildcat goal, Grimm, assisted by Jordan Pierce, recorded his third point early in the fourth quarter. Kyle Wimer added another UMBC goal to bring the Retrievers within one goal of Villanova.

The Villanova offense, however, overpowered the Retrievers, and they recorded another two goals to bring the score to 9-6. But the highlight of the match occurred late in the fourth quarter as UMBC’s Scott Hopmann scored the final goal of the game, using a Canadian tuck to slip through a defensive double-team.

This match-up proved disappointing for the Retrievers, as they lost to Villanova 9-7. Also, they made little progress in choosing their starting goalkeeper, as none of the four potential starters were outstanding. Finally, the team needed more time to find a face-off man, as all three potential players won just one clean draw each during the game.

UMBC will have one more scrimmage to try and answer these questions. They host Loyola (MD) at noon on February 12, at UMBC stadium.

“It’s great to have Andy Gallagher back as an assistant coach at UMBC,” Zimmerman said in a press release. “During his playing career, Andy consistently demonstrated outstanding leadership skills and a terrific feel for the game of lacrosse, playing with an incredible sense of passion and determination. The Retriever program is fortunate to have a person of Andy’s character on board and looks forward to continued growth and development.”

Since August 2008 Gallagher has been serving as the Director of Student Activities and assistant boys’ lacrosse coach at DeMatha Catholic High School, his Alma Mater.

While at UMBC Gallagher came back from ACL tears in his freshman and sophomore seasons to be named an All-American for his senior year in 2007, which was the season he led UMBC to it’s first-ever NCAA tournament win after scoring 35 goals and 51 points that year.

He has scored 146 points in his career, good for 11th all-time at UMBC. In 2005 as a sophomore he was named first-team All-America East, and was named to the second-team in 2007.

After Mundorf graduated in 2006, and Westervelt graduated in 2007, the two were drafted in successive years by the Denver Outlaws to once again become teammates. The two are the third and fourth former Retrievers to be selected to the national team with the first being defender Gary Clipp (1976) in 182, and the second being defender George McGeeney (1982), who was selected in 1986 and 1990.

While at UMBC Mundorf earned All-America honors in 2005 and 2006 and was the America East Player of the Year in 2006. Hist 112 career goals is good for sixth in school history while his 73 assists rank ninth, and 195 points is also sixth.

In 2006 Mundorf was also selected to compete for Team Australia for the World Lacrosse Championships, in which he led them to third-place with 32 points off 24 goals and eight assists.

Westervelt however earned third-team all-American honors in 2007 and is UMBC’s third all-time leading scorer with 206 points off 112 goals (tied for sixth all-time with Mundorf) and 94 assists (third all-time). In 2007 he recorded 35-goals and 26 assists for 71 points, which was second all-time in UMBC’s Division I history.

Since playing at UMBC both have dominated the MLL and were both 2009 All-Star selections.

UMBC head men’s lacrosse coach Don Zimmerman and his staff are pleased to welcome 19 newcomers to the Retrievers’ program for the fall of 2009. The largest incoming class in UMBC’s Division I history includes 18 freshmen and one transfer and is comprised of a dozen attackmen/midfielders, six defensemen/long-stick midfielders and one goalkeeper.

“We are excited to have this group of newcomers join the UMBC community,” Coach Zimmerman said. “In addition to providing the program with additional depth, these players have exhibited the strong character and work ethic we believe is the trademark of Retriever lacrosse.”

The Retrievers will compete in a pair of fall tournaments in October. On Saturday, Oct. 10, UMBC will take part in the Third Annual Nick Colleluori Classic in Folsom, Pa, facing Hofstra at 3:00 p.m. and Villanova at 5:00 p.m. Each year the HEADstrong Foundation hosts this lacrosse tournament with all proceeds going towards blood cancer research.

The following Saturday, Oct. 17, Coach Zimmerman’s team will compete in the 12^th Annual Lacrosse for Leukemia Fall Invitational Tournament at Cedar Lane Park in Bel Air, Md. The Retrievers face St. John’s (12:50 p.m.) and Air Force (2:30 p.m.) . A Glance at the Newcomers

David Brown (M/A, 5-8, 165 lbs., Coopersburg, PA/The Hill School) Brown was named to the Mid-Atlantic Prep League First-Team in his senior year. The four-year varsity starter scored was a career-best 17 goals in the 2008 season.

Adam Cohen (G, 5-7, 170 lbs., Arnold, Md./The Severn School) Cohen was ranked as of the top 15 incoming goalkeepers in Inside lacrosse. A 2009 Ensign C. Markland Kelly award finalist posted a sizzling 68% save percentage in his senior campaign for the Admirals and earned Second-Team All-County honors. Cohen also competed in the 2008 Under Armour game for underclassmen.

Nick Doub (M, 5-10, 170 lbs., Annapolis, Md./St. Mary’s) Doub scored 20 goals and added 40 assists and earned Capital Gazette First-Team All-County honors in 2009. He was the Saints’ team captain and named their “Unsung Hero” last spring. Doub was recently listed amongst Inside Lacrosse’s top incoming 40 attackmen.

Matt Gregoire (A, 6-2, 180 lbs., Crofton, Md./South River) Gregoire led the Seahawks to a 4A/3A state championship in 2009, scoring five goals in the title game. He was selected to the First-Team All-County in both his junior and senior seasons and was a Washington Post Second-Team All-Metro honoree  after amassing 46 goals and 16 assists last spring. Gregoire was recently listed amongst Inside Lacrosse’s top incoming 40 attackmen.

Jamie Grimm (LSM, 5-9,200 lbs., Black River, N.Y./Carthage Central) Grimm was named to the Frontier All- League team in all four years of varsity lacrosse for the Comets. Also a two-year letterwinner and Scholar-Athlete in football, he helped lead the team to the state championship game in his junior campaign. Jamie is the younger brother of 2009 America East All-Rookie team member and Retriever attackman Rob Grimm.

Riley Hansen (D, 6-1, 185 lbs., Annapolis, Md./The Salisbury School) As a senior, Hansen received the Salisbury School’s Corkery Medal, which goes to a senior that participates in three sports (lacrosse, cross country, and basketball). He has competed in the Maryland Freestate Top 44 game and the Under Armour game for underclassmen. His older brother, Pat, lettered in lacrosse at Ohio State  and Stevenson.

Scott Hopmann (M, 5-11, 165 lbs.,Annapolis, Md./St. Mary’s) Hopmann scored 20 goals and added 16 assists for the fifth-ranked (Inside Lacrosse) Saints in 2009. His best effort was a four-goal, five-point effort against St. Paul’s.  His older brother, Alex, graduated from UMBC in 2009 and earned All-America honors as a senior midfielder.

Joseph Impallaria (M, 5-8 175 lbs., Lutherville, Md./Calvert Hall College) Impallaria won the Calvert Hall Ground Ball Award in 2007, 2008, and 2009, recording 305 ground balls in that span. He won 471 face-offs and maintained a 73% face-off winning percentage from 2007-09. His father, Joseph J. Impallaria, Jr., played lacrosse at the former Western Maryland College (McDaniel College) from 1979-82 and has served three tours of duty in Iraq.

Scott Jones (A, 6-4, 225 lbs., Port Moody, B.C./Terry Fox) Jones was selected as a 2009 Junior A British Columbia First-Team All-Star. He scored 44 goals and added 46 assists in 21 games for the Port Coquitlam Saints last season. Jones’ older brother, Jeff Ratcliffe, lettered in lacrosse from 1997-2000 at UMBC and is currently tenth on the all-time list with 104 goals scored.

Casey Lasda (A/M, 5-9 165 lbs., Syracuse, NY/Christian Brothers Academy) Lasda was selected to the OHSL Section 3 First-Team All-League in 2008 and again in 2009. He earned Honorable Mention All-CNY honors in 2008 and 2009 and played on the Central team in the 2008 Empire State Games. Lasda was recently listed amongst Inside Lacrosse’s top incoming 40 attackmen.

Neill Lewnes (M, 5-7, 160 lbs, Arnold, Md./St. Mary’s) Lewnes scored 11 goals, added 14 assists, corralled a team-best 108 ground balls and won 63 percent of his draws for St. Mary’s.  He was selected to the First-Team All-County and All-MIAA team in 2009. Lewnes was the team’s Most Valuable Player and its team captain and the All-County tailback, who rushed for over 1,200 yards,  also captained the Saints’ football team in 2008.

Joe Lustgarten (A, 5-10, 150 lbs, Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River)  In prep career, Lustgarten scored 105 goals and added 149 assists, including a senior campaign which featured 33 goals and had 43 helpers. He earned All-America honors from the state of New York (Suffolk County) in 2009. Lustgarten was three- time All Suffolk County Selection and a three-time All-Division selection. As a sophomore, he scored a career-best 38 goals and 100 points and led the Wildcats to a state championship.

Sam McKelvey (D, 6-0, 175 lbs., Davidsonville, Md./South River) McKelvey was the winner of the prestigious 4A/3A C. Markland Kelly Award after a brilliant senior campaign. The close defender was selected First-Team All-Metro (Washington Post) and First-Team All-County and Second-Team All-Metro by The Baltimore Sun.  He also earned First-Team Mid-Atlantic/South honors by U.S. Lacrosse and earned a 4A/3A state title with the Seahawks last spring.

Ethan Murphy (D, 6-0, 180 lbs., West Seneca, N.Y./West Seneca East) During his prep career, Murphy had 514 groundballs, 27 goals, and 13 assists. He earned All-America honors as a senior for the New York-Buffalo region. Murphy was named West Seneca’s Male Athlete of the Year, by the West Seneca Bee and was a two-time First-Team All-Western New York honoree.

Joey Placek (M/A, 5-10, 170 lbs., Laurel, Md./Atholton) Placek was named the Raiders’ Most Valuable Player as a senior. He earned All-County honors in both 2007 and 2009 and served as the team captain last spring. Placek scored a career-high eight goals and added four assists in an overtime win over rival Hammond in his sophomore campaign.

Tony Spada (M, 5-11, 165 lbs, Kingston, N.Y./Saugerties) Spada is a two-time U.S. Lacrosse All-American from the New York-Mid-Hudson region. He was the first junior in New York state Section 9 history to be named an All-American. Spada was a three-time Section 9 First-Team midfielder and was the 2009 Times Herald Record Lacrosse Player-of-the-Year. His Saugerties teams have won six consecutive Section 9 championships.

David Stock (Jr., D, 6-0, 175 lbs., Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township/CCBC –Essex) At CCBC-Essex, Stock was named First-Team All-American by the NJCAA. He also earned Region XX Most Valuable Defensive Player in 2009. Stock was named to First-Team All-Region and to the First-Team All-Maryland JUCO squad.  He was selected First-Team All-League, and was an All-District defenseman while at Manheim Township.

Lucas Wood (D, 6-2, 185 lbs., Columbus, Ohio/Worthington-Kilbourne)  Wood was a three-time First Team All-Region selection and was named to First-Team All-OCC. He also earned First-Team All-Midwest and Second-Team All-Ohio honors in 2009. He helped the Wolves win a state championship as a last spring. Wood also captured the school’s Gold Key Award winner, which is given to a student for having a 3.5 grade-point average through the senior year.

Jake Zimmerman (5-11, 170 lbs., Baltimore, Md./Boys’ Latin)  Zimmerman received the Jack Williams Cup for Sportsmanship in his senior year with the Lakers. The son of UMBC head coach Don Zimmerman, Jake also earned the captain’s award for varsity lacrosse. He also lettered in football for Boys’ Latin and earned academic honor roll recognition during the 2008-09 academic year.
