The UMBC baseball team won its first victory of the year when they defeated Long Island 10-5 in Auburndale, Florida. Leading the dogs to victory with a grand slam was junior Bryan Russo.  Also, senior Andrew Germuth pitched for six solid innings.
During the bottom of the fourth inning, sophomore Michael Pesci hit a double base hit to score two juniors: Rich Conlon and Rick Phillips for a tie.  Following the tie, Curtis Schickner drove in Pesci with a fly to center field, which left the Retrievers winning 3-2.
Freshman Aaron Brill led the bottom of the seventh with a triple, and sophomore Casey Medairy, and junior Marty Zawacki followed the triple with walks.  Phillips scored two players in with a single.  Pesci also followed with another single.  Lastly, Russo hit his second home run of the season to left field.
Senior Andrew Germuth allowed two earned runs from Long Isldand while striking out a UMBC season-high of nine in six innings.  Freshman Sean Swetnam also struck out five players.
The Retrievers return to action on Tuesday to face NJIT at 11 a.m.
