Early on the morning of January 28 2009, between 12 and 12:45am, the lights dimmed and flickered before plunging the entire UMBC campus into sudden darkness and confusion. The power outage, which ranged across the UMBC campus as well as parts of Rt. 40 in Catonsville, was the result of the loss “of two BGE (Baltimore Gas and Electricity) feeder cables that serve the campus [community] due to a vehicle striking a power pole at the corner of Security Boulevard and Colonial Drive,” said UMBC’s Vice President of Administration and Finance Lynne Schaefer. The outage lasted approximately 45 minutes, and power was restored before 1am.

Junior and Harbor Hall resident Allison Isberg said, “I was about to get on the elevator when all the lights went out. It was really unexpected, and I’m just glad I wasn’t in the elevator when it happened!”

  1. I live in Potomack dorms, and I was sleeping in my room when bunch of idiots outside started running around screaming and making zombie noises… Then I went outside and saw bunch of them running away from some people with flashlights who were claiming they were RA’s on duty or something…

  2. Oh. So that’s what happened. I was wondering why my clock was blinking meaning that it had to be reset (it does this when the lights go out) when I got up in the middle of the night to use the restroom. I hope that everyone was okay in the car crash.

  5. 1 – This is stupid, you people really need to find something better to do.

2 – If anyone, they were left in an elevator for 45min, you spend more time in you’re room doing Xbox.

3 – The people in the car crash were probably crack or heroine addicts because:

  6. a) – It’s Baltimore, open your eyes.
    b) – It’s another idiot freshman coming home from Fishbowl, and do we really need anymore idiots in our society?

  7. Yeah I found it pretty ridiculous that we’re in college and when the lights go out, everyone begins running around and screaming like crazy. Really? If it’s that amusing, go in your room and turn the lights off. Maybe it’ll be just as fun.
