Breaking News: Chauncey Gilliam’s Eligibily Restored, Set to Play in Opener Against Morgan State
By: Corey Johns -

It has been confirmed by both Chauncey Gilliams and the UMBC athletic department that sophomore wingman Chauncey Gilliam has had is eligibility restored after being declared academically ineligible earlier this year.

Gilliam said that he had an incomplete but finished the class, which led to his eligibility being restored.

He is the Retriever leading returning scorer from last year having averaged 10.6 p.p.g. and should see a significant increase in scoring opportunities as UMBC’s go-to-guy this year.

Statement from Gilliam: “It’s been a tough semester but now it’s time to buckle down and focus on our season as well as continue to focus on my academics.”

Im happy for Chauncey as well as the basketball team. I expect the team to do well now and the tough early season schedule they have should not be as grueling. In order for UMBC to be sucessful though they have to buckle down on defense allowing your opponets to score 72 points is not okay; but to score 34 points and only allow 22 points is awesome but to give up 50 points in the second half thats not good. For this team to be sucessful they are going to have to win the battle on the boards both on offense and defense force more turnovers, have a more balanced scoring attack not just Chauncey and Matt putting up double figures, Get to the free throw line more often then fourteen times in a game convert more freethrows and shooting a higher field goal percentage and block more shots which may lead to easier baksets in transistion.

The key to beating Layola is doing the things that I just wrote about going 1-1 before playing Gerogewashington will do a lot for the mometum of this team. To win UMBC is going to have to force Layola to shoot a lower field goal percentage then 48.2 as well as shoot a higher percentage then Layola is allowing there oppents which is 38.2 and force senior Brett Harvey not to put up anything close to the 16.5 points he is averaging. If The UMBC Mens basketball team is not going to go 0-2 for the first time in about 7yrs there going to have to play conistent agressive fundmentally sound basketball or close to it for both periods 1st and 2nd not allow fastbreak points turnovers rebounds freethrows and hard noise defense butt downs hands out on ball and off ball defense will be the key plus getting the ball to inside to the big men will be key plus the turnover to assist ratio must improve. If UMBC does this they should come out with a win look for this to be a high scoring game in the 60 seventies may eighities or nineties if they game is lower then that it will be in the fifities margin. I see UMBC winning 73- 70 83-80 or 58-55
