Time Magazine lists President Hrabowski among Top Ten

November 12th, 2009 - 10:16 by Ariane Szu-tu

In an issue that hits newsstands this Friday, Time Magazine names Dr. Freeman Hrabowski one of the Ten Best College Presidents in the U.S. President Hrabowski stated, “This recognition reflects the campus’s success and the high quality of the academic experience here.” He added, “It’s an honor for each of us to be a member of the UMBC community.”
UMBC is famous for propelling students through its science and engineering Ph.D. programs and, according to Time Magazine, is one of the “leading sources of African-American Ph.D.s in science and engineering.” However, President Hrabowski said, “We’re working to build a university that has first-rate research across all disciplines.”
Other universities in the Top Ten were Ohio State University, New York University, University of Michigan Ann Arbor, Arizona State University, Tulane University, Middlebury College, Miami Dade College, University of Texas at Brownsville and the University of California Oakland.

  1. “I often say to people that yes, over half of our students are in science fields, but the other half are in arts,” says Hrabowski.

    51+% + 50% = 100%??????

  2. Please… UMBC is not nearly as good as people give him credit for. Many of my engineering classes have been overcrowded in modified classrooms to support 2x the students. There is no hope of seeing the board or hearing the teacher. There are plenty of problems he just chooses to ignore them and absorb all of the praise. Ive had enough of this #1 BS

  3. Wow…let’s not be anal retentive…it’s still clear what he meant – that our arts programs are just as strong as the sciences
