Speculation surrounding UMBC Police Chief Antonio Williams’ future is mounting. The Retriever Weekly was notified last week that, in addition to a position at University of Florida, Williams has been considered for the Chief’s position at University of Maryland, Baltimore. TRW also received information that UMBC has placed a counter-offer against UMB to keep Chief Williams here.

Working after a tip was received from UMBC staff, TRW was able to reach staff at UMB who confirmed that on Friday, October 23, UMB’s police Chief told his staff tht he had narrowed down the finalists to replace him to three.  In an attempt to confirm an off-the-record comment, a source in the UMBC police department revealed that Chief Williams had applied for this position. Based on the timing of the tip claiming UMB had identified Chief Williams as one of the finalists, along with the announcement made to UMB staff that same day, TRW has identified Chief Williams as one of the finalists for the position of UMB police chief.

This follows The Gainesville Sun report stating that Chief Williams is a finalist for the position of Florida’s Gainesville Police Department chief.

When asked by the Gainesville Sun, about his motivation for seeking this position, Chief Williams said, “My goals and aspirations are quite general and that’s to make the city as safe as it can be and to have the most cohesive, customer service-driven department as possible.”

Williams would not comment.

He should concentrate on recovering the missing computers from the English dept, and solve the other crimes on the UMBC campus (e.g. break-ins), before even considering other positions.
