Assault on Campus

September 23rd, 2009 - 12:38 by Alethea Paul

According to UMBC Police, an incident including harassment, Sexual Offense of the 4th Degree, and 2nd degree assault with hands was reported to UMBC police on September 9. The incident, according to the daily police log, took place in the Chemistry building, but was not reported until September 13. Though police refused to release details due to the sensitive nature of the case, Deputy Chief of UMBC Police Manual Lewis said, “We want to be respectful to victims, this is [after all] an alleged incident.”

Although he would not give out the names, he did explain that the alleged victim was a student, and that the alleged culprit was simply a “non-student,” but he did not clarify whether or not there were any ties to UMBC. However, according to weekly police log, the student was assaulted by a UMBC staff or faculty member. Lewis also indicated that the incident was more of a physical nature than a verbal one, and explained that “The incident is being dealt with by the administration in conjunction with us, [the UMBC police].”

Lewis explained that more information will be released when there is a conclusion to the case. The Retriever Weekly will continue to update UMBC on this as more information is released.

  1. Is the student WAS (allegedly) assaulted by a faculty member, shouldn’t we be made aware? I guess there’s a privacy issue, but there’s also a safety issue.

  2. I think I know which faculty member it was. He does things like this to girls on a VERY regular basis, but no one reports them. I encourage anyone else who he has put his hands on to report it… He needs to lose his job. This needs to stop happening.

I won’t say a name because I have no personal evidence… I have only heard stories from multiple people. But the name needs to be released. I think more female students who have been victims of his actions will come forward if it is.

  3. Its an equal SHAME if justice is DELAYED, as much as it NOT DONe. These should be dealt with most severe and expedited reasoning. Lie detector tests should be used. Full kudos and sympathy for the victim(s); God is with you- be brave!
