Press Release From UMBC Athletics:

Chauncey Gilliam, a sophomore guard on the UMBC men’s basketball team, has been declared academically ineligible to compete in games during th fall 2009 semester.

Gilliam, who averaged 10.9 points per game in his freshman campaign, will be permitted to practice with the team.  His eligibility status will be reviews after UMBC’s final exam period concludes on December 22.

“Obviously, we’re disappointed that we’ll be without Chauncey during the first semester,” head coach Randy Monroe said.  “He’s such a fierce competitor who brings that swagger to our team.  We’ll miss him, but he will certainly have our support during this difficult time.”

Further coverage of this event will be featured in the Sept. 22, 2009 issue of The Retriever Weekly.

  4. Well I could only sense that something was going too happen with him, because he has such a bad/negative attitude and feels that everyone owes him since he is such a good athlete. Now we will see if he will work hard and try to get his grades up to play again with our team or transfer out to a school where academics aren’t the priority.

Although I am not a fan (because of him temper among other things) I hope he decides to do this for himself and stick it out.

@Fan: Lets be adult, okay, I apologize Emma for his rude behavior

  8. hey everybody
i just want to clear something up i have a 2.55 GPA my ineligibility has to do with the amount of credits i have. i dont usually respond to press but i have to live here and deal with people on a day to day basis so i stepped out of the box…thank you for all of your encouragement i will be back second semester…and God bless to the people that dislike me and im sorry you feel that way. thanks

  11. I am stunned not at his ineligibility, but at the fact that this information is being made public. do we have no concern for the man’s dignity? could his suspension from the team been made a little bit more discretely? this is not okay to be openly discussing his personal information like this. I am more dissapointed in the author who published this.

  12. Chauncey Gilliam,
We ain’t hatin, dawg! Just tryna help out! Hit them books, bro!

    Kayla,
I mean, what else did you expect them to do? All the fans would notice his absence from the team anyways sooner or later and start getting mad and asking questions!
