Men’s Soccer Gets Past Mount St. Mary’s 2-1
By: Corey Johns -

The men’s soccer team improved their record to 5-0 with a 2-1 victory over local rival Mount St. Mary’s.  UMBC is currently off to their best start since 1999 when the team started 6-0, which they road to a 19-1-2 NCAA tournament birth.

The game was the first of the season that UMBC trailed in, as Mount St. Mary’s forawrd Chris Wheeler deflected a free kick in for a score midway through the first half.  But with 32 seconds left Andrew Bulls knoted the game with his eight goal of the season, matching his goal output from last season.  Sophomore defender Jason McCarron made a long pass towards the goal, which freshman Matt Knight headed into the post.  But the ball bounced in front of the goal and Bulls slide it into the goal while the goalie was out of position.  The game winning goal came from Houapeu who converted a pentalty in the 75th minute.

Four Retrievers were selected to the all-Adidas Kick Off Classic Tournament team.  Chris Williams and Vince Savarese represented the team on defense while Houapeu (one goal and three assists) was selected as a foraward along with Bulls (three goals).  Bulls was also named the tournament MVP.

The UMBC mens soccer team is just awesome this year. They have the offensive fire power and defensive toughness to make them a dangerous team. in 1999 The Retrievers went 19 – 1 -2 en rout to a NCAA tournament birth. This year’s team is one win away from matching the win out put that team started out the season with before winning 13 games and only losing once and having two ties. I will say it now look for Andrew Bullis to be a 1st team All American in the American East squad at the end of the season not to mention he could lead all of Division 1 in goals scored and be in the top ten top fifteen or top 5 in assists.

In conclusion this soccer squad is going to have a Cinderella season thanks to the All star players they have, and if everyone on this team comes back that’s now an underclassman next years team with one more year of experience could be absolutely dangerous and win even more games and maybe even get close if not win a national championship because they will definitely win there regular season and post season confrence titles this year and next year.
