The men’s soccer team improved their record to 2-0 with a 5-1 rout of the Fighting Blue Hens.
Andrew Bulls is off to a great start to the season and scored the first two goals of the match for UMBC, both were the only two goals scored in the first half. His first goal came in the 15th minute when he picked up a losse ball in front of the goal and slid it past the Delaware goalie. Fifteen minutes later Bulls mad a play on a through ball from Levi Houapeu for his second goal of the match, and what proved to be the game winner.
With a 2-0 lead at the half UMBC was in good shape but Chris Williams put little doubt that they would end the game victorious after just 80 seconds into the second half he headed a ball into the goal of a perfectly placed penalty kick from Andrew Bulls.
Andy Streilein joined in on the action and scored a goal after stealing the ball in front of the goal, making one defender miss, and blasting the shot in for a score. Streilein transfered from Delaware after playing for them last season as a freshman.
The final goal of the game came from Houapeu who received a long pass from freshman Dave Vaeth and took it for the final UMBC goal.
Phil Saunders started his second game in goal and recorded four saves and did not allow a goal in over 75 minutes of work.
The lone Delaware goal came when the second team was in. Jamal Molin received a redcard for retaliation after being on the field for just 17-seconds. That put UMBC down a man to help replacement goalie Miguel Calderon.
Further coverage of this game will be featured in the September 8, 2009 issue of The Retriever Weekly.
