By: Corey Johns -

UMBC scored three goals in the first 52 minutes to go up 3-0 on ACC foe Virginia Tech in their season opener.  Midfielder Sean Rothe scored the first goal of the game midway through the first half after he redirected a free kick from Andrew Bulls from eight yards out.

Andrew Bulls then scored his first goal of the season for the second straight time in the season opener when Levi Houapeu passed the ball to Milo Kapor, who has a two-on-two opportunity with Bulls.  He crossed the ball to Bulls, who shot the ball from 12 yards out and got it past the goal keeper just before half-time.

UMBC’s final goal came from Houapeu who capitalized on a 60 yard break away from Andy Streilein.

Virginia Tech scored their lone goal of the contest when James Gilson stole the ball, made the defender miss, and shot the ball in the far corner of the goal.

Phil Saunders recorded three saves as goal keeper in his first collgiate game.

The win also marked UMBC’s fourth-straight home-opening victory.

Further coverage of this game will be featured in the September 8, 2009 issue of The Retriever Weekly.
