How can we improve the Retriever?
By: Andrea Thomson -

Hi Everyone,

The Retriever is constantly changing and growing and we want advice from you so that we can best cater to your needs and interests. As News Editor, I have heard from several students who love the Retriever and many others who have compained that the Retriever doesn’t write about anything that interests the UMBC community. I believe that the Retriever has improved alot since I’ve started writing for it — but there is nothing I want more than to increase our readership and further improve our reputation as a realiable, informative and entertaining newspaper that EVERYONE can enjoy. Please comment on this post to tell me what you’d like to see reported upon, what you enjoy in the Retriever and what you think needs a little work (esp regarding News, I won’t be able to speak for the other editors). For the past few months I’ve been trying to incorporate more investigative pieces into News (i.e. this weeks – “Is Quadmania worth it article?)” as well as putting in a new financial fixture (in response to the economic issues many of us are facing).

What do you guys think? Also, we’re always looking for a diverse set of strong writers who can speak for the student body. If you’ve ever wanted to see yourself published or are just interested in knowing everything there is to know about UMBC contact me at tandrea1@umbc.edu. Our print edition will be going on a bit of a hiatus after tommorrow’s issue, which will be our last, but we still need people keeping their eyes and ears open for us over the summer and starting again in the Fall.

You definitely need to write more about the nightlife/party/entertainment events. For example, at the Flat Tuesdays Pub, at the Fishbowl Nightclub, at the UC Ballroom, at the Gameroom, or at the campus dorms, there is always something goin’ on, but many people simply never hear/read about it and then complain that “UMBC is boring because there’s nothing to do on campus”…
You guys should be held responsible for the exposure and coverage of the campus life here at UMBC, because The Retriever Weekly’ is the main source of information for campus students!

ok, point taken. I’ll pass your remark along to Arts – they’re the ppl who deal with your kind of stuff.

You should have a spotlight area where, every week a couple of student orgs in the same category could be interviewed to share info about their organization, upcoming events, and contact info. You guys would solicit these organizations and the orgs would be responsible for contacting you guys for the interview. That could help awareness of what types of student organizations are actually on campus and how much students can get involved in. Other than that, I am very pleased with The Retriever weekly and I think that it definitely has improved over the years!

A lot is two words.

Complained has an L in it.

You should try editing for grammar and punctuation, as a start.

The retriever puts the campus down a lot. I see from page articles putting Quadmania and Jest for Fun down. It’s ok to have those opinions, but are they front page news? It’s depressing to read the whiny articles that the events people put on are not as fun as they should be, or something. Be grateful there are any events at all.

Also, I agree with a student before me; some of the better events on campus go unnoticed. I hope the Retriever writes an article on how the SGA brought Pets on Wheels to campus during finals week!

I’d like to see more articles on administration as well, to get a better feel for how the campus is run.

And yes, you need a more hard-working editor. Every issue has glaring errors.

I think a lot of people would appreciate it if they could count on the Retriever Weekly to give them the news straight up and without a political spin.

I generally enjoy the Retriever Weekly, but the politically charged articles really ruin it for me. I honestly don’t care what your writers’ opinions are–I just want the news.

i’m kind of tired of seeing 3-4 articles in the same issue about the same topic (ex having more than 2 quadmania articles in the same issue). Try having some of those writers explore different stories and topics and PLEASE lose the redundancy!!

Overall, I like the Retriever Weekly a lot! I don’t think you guys should change anything! I just have a few minor suggestions:

1. Just like some people here already said, feature more articles about the “The Fishbowl”, because it’s like THE coolest spot around the campus, and always crowded with UMBC students!

2. Bring the weekly poll to the front page! This will encourage more people to go online and participate in order to have their voices heard.

3. Don’t listen to that “MG” guy who commented against opinion articles. I love the ‘political spin’ AS LONG as it represent students’ interests!

I like the Retriever Weekly… I think the articles should focus more on quality, less on quantity.

Usually the feature, front page articles are good. But a lot of times I see random articles about fashion or trivial opinions which seem like they are just there to fill up space. Often these articles are not as well written, or as not as interesting as the feature articles. I think this is why people complain that the newspaper isn’t good.

So basically don’t add pointless articles just to fill up pages! They bring down the quality of the meaningful articles.

fishbowl is not cool.

@ anna - May 17, 2009, 8:13 pm

You don’t like it? U’re probably one of those nerds who spend all of their time playing videogames in their dorms rather than go outside to meet some REAL peopl!

Stop bashing Baltimore and start covering a the positive stuff in the city and around campus.
