Fees increase a total of $104
By: Alethea Paul -

In this year’s SGA elections, UMBC student voters approved Referendum A to increase the annual student activity fee from $78 to $88. It turns out that the activity fee will not be the only increase students will experience on their bills for academic year 2010-2011, according to information from the SGA, available at: http://sga.umbc.edu/finances/forms/Mandatory_fee_proposals_for_student_fee_forum_2011.pdf

All fee increases in total for fiscal year 2011 will come to an additional $104 from what students pay now. Students will absorb these proposed new fees in light of the increasing costs of running the university, manifested most notably to students in the increase of the activity fee. However, that was a fee increase approved by UMBC’s student body, but the other proposed increases (in the fields of Athletics, Facilities, the Commons, Transportation, and Technology) are not subject to student approval.

Students may wonder why these fees increase steadily each year, forcing upon them $2,492 (according to figures provided by the SGA) of fees on top of tuition and other costs of higher education. To answer these questions, there will be an SGA-hosted forum on the matter to be held on Monday, May 4, at 12:15pm in the Student Org space on the second floor of the Commons. At this forum, representatives of each of the departments that will reflect a fee increase will be present to help students understand why their bills will see an increase once again and to field student queries on the issue, according to Steve Gilmore.

OUTRAGEOUS!!!

Adriana - April 30, 2009, 11:49 pm

Is that a joke?? I urge you fellow UMBC students to be there on Monday and ask some questions and demand some answers!

Peter - May 1, 2009, 4:46 pm

I refuse to pay more! In fact, I’m calling CNN on Monday!

Tyron - May 1, 2009, 7:25 pm

Well, they pushed their agenda and got this increase. Guess what though, I’m not paying it, I’m transferring to a real institution where the focus is on education and not these stupid high-school activities. The SGA is a joke, led by incompetent morons. Consider the SGA’s recent history- you have a music major (MUSIC?!?!) who can’t keep an acceptable GPA. Give me a break, Mozart! This whole Honors Univerisity is a joke. So SGA, you can take that $4 fee and shove it right up your ass.

Young Voters…

JB - May 3, 2009, 7:03 pm

i havent read into this at all..but it seems to me that the SEB decided to push ref A and get votes by playing the “its only 10.00!” card

the total increases werent ignored, but there wasnt a push to show students that this wouldnt be the only increase during the campaigning for this ref a..like any other politician would do of course. Mostly the blame falls on the students for not realizing 10.00 increase doesnt equal 10.00 increase total..

also, many students dont look into what the exact details of tuition entails (including me)

dan - May 3, 2009, 8:54 pm

Dan,
I think from the wording of this article it’s clear that REF A and the 100-some dollar fee increase are 2 different things.

I think the transportation fee is COMPLETELY unnecessary. @ UMD, it’s roughly the same as here, but here everything’s within walking distance, whereas students @ college park have 2 take the bus everywhere (at least thats what i hear from them).

what do u guys think?

Peter - May 3, 2009, 9:24 pm

PLEASE REDUCE ATHLETIC, TRANSPORTATION FEES!!!
THEY ARE RIDICULOUSLY INFLATED!!!
I’M NOT PAYING THIS UNREASONABLE ATHLETIC FEE, BECAUSE WE ARE NOT EVEN IN NCAA IN MOST SPORTS WE PLAY!
Instead, we should invest that money in research, quality student activities, and better campus maintenance!

Dwayne - May 4, 2009, 10:53 am

I would be willing to pay a one-time fee to get automatic faucets and towel dispensers in all bathrooms. I don’t know about you dudes, but I am tired of being in the bathroom witnessing girls who don’t bother to use soap or even wash their hands at all! NASTY!! Instead using funds for a bunch of unnecessary activities and flat screens everywhere, how about putting money toward our health? Or educating these nasty people about hand-washing and germs…

Can’t make the forum… I’m STUDYING.

TM - May 4, 2009, 11:20 am

lol, some schools has a higher fees than we do….yet some of you are whining about this. This change is needed because of the economy and rising costs. yes the rise in transportation fee is not needed but its needed to counter the again rising gas costs. They are increasing atheltic fees because they want to remodel or build new athletic areas. Also its part of RAC as well, if you do use RAC then you have to pay for it….its not really free do you think its free just cuz we are students here? I know that we had a idoit for president this year but SGA ONLY approved the student activity fees cuz they are not the one that decides that UMBC needs more money

LOLZ - May 4, 2009, 11:28 am

Hey, I say have the bookstore give us more money back for books that they aren’t going to ship back to a wholesaler and we should be able to re-coup that $104. I have to agree that the Athletics fee should go up–there are more broken treadmills than working ones…sometimes there’s even a line to use them. More cardio equipment would be awesome. In regards to the transportation fee, part of that is our parking permits. The other part is the shuttle buses, the only one that I have seen advertised is the downtown bus to UMB–not many people realize that we have functioning shuttle buses. However, I feel that the transportation fee should be placed more on commuter students that actually use them? Maybe parking services should advertise their bus lines…

Sue - May 4, 2009, 12:00 pm

Just wondering, have you ever been to an athletic event on this campus? A statement such as “not even NCAA in most sports we play” is a stupid, ignorant comment. You should have done your research. We have 20 teams at UMBC that all compete in NCAA competition. Better yet, division 1 competition. Maybe if you would go to some events (which are free to students) you would better appreciate where your money goes. Unfortunately, you feel the need to complain about something you know nothing about.

To Dwayne - May 4, 2009, 1:46 pm

The athletic fee better be put to good use. The weight room and cardio equipment is horriable. I was there today and I had to find and a wrench to tightnen up the dumbells before it fell apart.

d - May 4, 2009, 4:30 pm

why are people whining about this? do you want a better school? that requires money..this isn’t even that much more compared to what we are already paying

Jon - May 4, 2009, 5:27 pm

Whoever just replied to me (couple messages above) is not the brightest individual out there! Learn about basketball before accusing others of being “stupid and ignorant”.
By “NCAA” I definitelty meant what most normal people would mean – NCAA Division 1 Championship (65 best teams nationwide, e.g UNC, UCLA, Duke, Maryland, etc.).
I mean, who cares about boring lower-level competitions like that “America East” conference table you were talking about… It’s never in the news… The Championship is!!!
Retrievers are NEVER gonna be up there with the best! You know why?..
Because our state already has Maryland TERPS for that and we’ll never overshadow them!
Yet, College Park actually charges LOWER athletic fee than UMBC!!!

Dwayne - May 4, 2009, 5:59 pm

Dawayne

Actually its in the news, its just you living under the rock to start with. Maybe youre a out of state idoit thats attending umbc?

LOLZ - May 4, 2009, 9:28 pm

I have to agree with lolz. Lacrosse just got into the NCAA tourney, mens basketball got in last year and womens the year before that. If I’m not mistaken, UMBC has been in as many NCAA mens basketball tourneys in the last 4 years as Maryland has.

kevin - May 4, 2009, 9:48 pm

Sue – Why should commuters pay more for the transportation fee? It’s not like the university is paying for our gas. And a little piece of plastic to hang on our mirrors doesn’t cost that much either. Also, the other thing that the transportation fee pays for is actual UMBC transport, like when they charter buses to go somewhere. That could apply to anyone.

Fact is, we’re all gonna have to deal with this, even if we don’t like it. I think they need to learn how to spend money on real things, instead of waiting and ending up spending it all on random things that crop up, but that’s just my opinion. The other thing is, I think UMBC’s doing a good job, considering how bad the place used to be. Okay, it still needs work, but at least it’s better than before.

Jen - May 4, 2009, 10:25 pm

I think that it’s ridiculous that the fees increased. They assume that everyone on campus takes advantage of these opportunities. It’s downright insulting. I don’t understand why we have to pay more for Athletics when we could be using that money to have better equipment. A few years ago, there was a petition to add a $10 arts fee. This got rejected. Instead we have to pay a ridiculous amount towards Athletics while the arts have no extra funding. Then again, you know what they say, “Give them an inch and they’ll take a mile.” I guess that goes for increases as well. Thank you everyone who voted to have us pay more money to go to this mediocre school. At least we’re all screwed.

Jennifer - May 5, 2009, 8:55 am

Jen, I was thinking more of the students who use the UMBC shuttle bus to get to school instead of driving. But in the end its easier to charge everyone than certain people. I hope that they spend the money wisely. Such revamping the parking lot by the campus police station. Each isle dead ends and you can be SOL with someone behind you if the row full, and stuck unable to do a three point turn. And yes, this school is constantly improving; however, there is still much to be done…. will we ever see free printing in the library again? It would be nice to have a 100 page printout a term before having to pay extra. In the end it really turns into student turnout with new proposals.

Hopefully, the many different departments who have the power to spend students funds take the moment to read what everyone says on these online forums before spending $10,000 on T-Shirt Cannons when we need something else more important.

Sue - May 5, 2009, 10:09 am

Hey, guys, keep in mind that the transportation fee, last time I checked, helps to cover not only the shuttle system, but upkeep for parking lots. And I would assume that they’re increasing the fee to be able to bank some of it for the future, when they have to build multiple parking garages to make up for the loss of those lots for the Arts and Humanities buildings.
Also, keep in mind, other schools like Towson and College Park charge their students to park on campus… which is about the same amount that we pay. And for students who DON’T park on campus, there is the shuttle system available to be used, so… it is what it is

Pat - May 5, 2009, 10:52 am

What I don’t understand is, didn’t O’Malley just freeze UMD institution’s tuition? So why then are we having to pay an increase in fees? Furthermore, does anyone know when the 2011 fiscal year begins. I’m graduating soon and to learn that I won’t be around when it is implemented would be welcome news.

k. - May 5, 2009, 11:56 am

I see now the breakdown via the SGA link.

New question… what happened to good old fashioned fundraising? A lot of the increases are due to the need to pay Administrative and labor costs. Aren’t we a campus that stresses the importance of research and grant writing. No one could come up with a grant proposal to solicit additional monies? We have Erickson’s name on buildings why not others? Where does all of the money rendered from renting out the various campus buildings and fields to outside groups? Where is the institution’s cut of the Chick Filet monies and all of the vendors that are encroaching on study areas?

Furthermore, many of you may not have noticed that there will be a loss of parking spaces due to the new building going up. Do some of the “transportation costs” go to creating additional spaces?

k. - May 5, 2009, 12:04 pm

MARYLAND GOVERNMENT BANNED TUITION INCREASE – I’VE SEEN IT IN THE NEWS WITH MY OWN EYES COUPLE WEEKS AGO!
SO ALL THESE RUMOURS ABOUT UMBC RAISING THEIR FEES IS SIMPLY NOT TRUE!

R.K. - May 5, 2009, 12:29 pm

I’d assume that fees don’t fall under tuition, since I usually see the phrase “Tuition and fees”

Jonathan - May 5, 2009, 1:36 pm

Yeah, that’s probably why they’re raising the fees, because they can’t raise tuition.

Jen - May 5, 2009, 3:10 pm

So about the transportation fee…
crazy thought, but stay with me on this.

each student pays $300-some a year for this fee, yet only a few benefit from the shutle service.

So it will be cheaper to just give those students a car!

Peter - May 5, 2009, 4:21 pm

hm i guess that wouldnt neccessarily work cause every1 will want a car then…

Peter - May 5, 2009, 4:23 pm

SO LET ME GET IT STRAIGHT… THE GOVERNMENT OF THE STATE OF MARYLAND PROHIBITED THE INCREASE OF TUITION THIS YEAR, BUT UMBC WENT AHEAD AND FOUND THE WAY AROUND THE SYSTEM BY INCREASING ALL OF THE REQUIRED FEES?!!
I’M SORRY BUT I REFUSE TO BELIEVE THAT! THE WHOLE PURPOSE OF THE “TUITION FREEZE” LAW WAS TO HELP THE STUDENTS IN THESE TOUGH FINANCIAL TIMES!
I’M SURE UMBC KNOWS THAT AND WON’T GO AS LOW AS CHEATING. BECAUSE INFLATING ALL THE FEES IN ORDER TO COMPENSATE FOR THE “TUITION FREEZE” WOULD BE JUST THAT… CHEATING!!!

ANNA - May 5, 2009, 5:38 pm

@Anna
What does tuition pay for? Professors, academic buildings, etc
What do fees pay for? Everything else
“THE WHOLE PURPOSE OF THE “TUITION FREEZE” LAW WAS TO HELP THE STUDENTS IN THESE TOUGH FINANCIAL TIMES!”
Do you realize how long the tuition freeze has been in place? It’s been longer than this current economic slump. Who’s hit by this economic environment? Everyone. Unfortunately, shit still needs to be paid for, it’s getting more expensive, and the Admin either has to get funding for it, or get rid of programs.
Fees go up every year. It has absolutely nothing to do with tuition. Good luck in finding a university without them.
I’m surprised that no one’s complaining this time around about our athletics fees paying for athlete’s scholarships. That was the primary bitch topic last year

Pat - May 5, 2009, 8:51 pm

No ANNA thats what you call a loop hole lol

Joe - May 5, 2009, 9:07 pm

What kind of idiots would vote to spend MORE money?

Nemo - May 5, 2009, 9:09 pm

Peter, does the transportation fee also pay for transporting athletes? Or is that part of the athletic fee?

Otherwise, $300 is a LOT to spend on a bus service for a few people.

Breanna - May 5, 2009, 10:16 pm

Espescially if like me, the bus shuttle goes everywhere EXCEPT near you so you’re stuck paying to take the MTA anyway.

Tiffany - May 5, 2009, 10:43 pm

Guys, let’s call as many local TV channels from DC/Baltimore area as we can!
People deserve to know what’s happenin’ inside UMBC!

Dwayne - May 6, 2009, 9:27 am

Dwayne

stop being a moron, thank you

LOLZ - May 6, 2009, 9:42 am

LOLZ

u’re probably one of them rich kids whose parents are payin’, so do all of us a favor and S.T.F.U.!

Dwayne - May 6, 2009, 10:24 am

more than half the fees here are bogus and a complete waste of money. I have a friend that goes to UMUC and only pays about 80-$100 in fees. I hate to see what fees will look like 5 years from now – i wouldnt be surprised if we start paying a fee just to see an advisor or to use the bathroom

SLP - May 6, 2009, 1:43 pm

Well there’s another $104 for UMBC to piss away.

Josh - May 10, 2009, 7:57 pm
