Results from 1st Heat:

Rutgers Camden 8:18.1
The UMBC boat had a decent start off the line, quickly settling down to a
comfortable stroke rating. Rutgers was initially in the lead by about a
boat length. Around the 500 meter point the Rutgers boat began showing
signs of tiring. Right when they were about to pass under the bridge at
the 1200 meter mark they caught a crab and never fully recovered. As soon
as they caught a crab the UMBC boat did a power 10 to take the lead and
never let up through to the finish. Taking first place by a comfortable
distance.
Results from Final:
UMBC 7:51.1
Rutgers Camden 8:03.8
John Hopkins 8:09.2
College of NJ 8:30.1
St. Johns 8:56.4
Again the UMBC boat was quick off the line. Coach Becca Cluster before the
race advised the UMBC boat to never let John Hopkins get in front or first
place would fall out of sight and that is exactly what was done. At the
500 meter mark Rutgers was again in front by a decent amount. It was
thought that they would run out of power by the end so UMBC continued to
work solely to hold the other boats off. Around the 1200 meter mark it was
decided that a move had to be made. A power 20 brought us even with the
Rutgers boat and at the 1500 meter mark a power 10 gave us the lead. Once
1st place was in sight all the rowers gave every last bit of energy they
had and finished the race again with a comfortable lead over the nearest
boats.
On the way back to the dock after winning the entire team was standing on
a pier jutting out into the water. Heather Feaga, cox for the Varsity
Mens 4 shouted out Did you get them? Not quite hearing what was said in
the boat Michael Martin shouted back What? Heather again asked, Did you
get first? Upon hearing yea the entire team cheered. Coach Cluster ran
back to the dock to help us dock. Having not been on the pier when we
announced our finish, she asked, Was it first or second? When she heard,
Oh, it was first, she did a quick cheer, hurried us off the dock, and
the celebrations began.
This was the first time that Coach Cluster handed out medals to a winning
boat coached by herself.
Interesting Things to Note:
Last year our faculty advisor, Dr. Louis Cantori, who helped found UMBC
Crew passed away. The Novice Men were rowing in the boat named after him
