Record turnout in SGA elections
By: Alex Pyles -

According to numbers released by the SGA Election Board this afternoon, a school record 2,448 students voted in this year’s Student Government Association Election.

The record number accounts for 25.5 percent of the student body, a higher percentage turnout than fellow University System of Maryland schools University of Maryland, College Park (19.3 percent turnout) and Towson University (13.2 percent).

The highest ever vote total ironically comes in a year in which President-Elect Yasmin Karimian ran unopposed with running mate Jennifer Kent for the SGA’s top job.

The controversial Referendum A, which will raise student fees, was passed easily, with 69.4 percent of voting students choosing to support the increase.

Uh… the position title is “Vice President for Student Organizations”, not “Vice President for Student Affairs”… that would be Dr. Nancy Young…

where’s the results for president? isn’t there a minimum required to get elected? that info should be posted as well

It was unfortunate that Referendum A was passed. I don’t think majority of voters were truly aware of the alternatives. For example, increased Student Activity Fee can come from from the already existing general pool of mandatory fees by lowering the highly-inflated Athletic, Commons, Transportation and some other fees and investing the difference into the Student Activity Fee!
SGA is supposed to represent students and protect our interest by negotiating with the UMBC’s financial board instead of trying to charge us higher fees!
