Senior point guard Jay Greene picked up where Darryl Proctor left off the day before, scoring 29 points to help UMBC beat Albany for the second time in seven days.
The win buys the Retrievers a ticket to the AEC Championship Game on Saturday. UMBC will play No. 1 seed Binghamton, who defeated the University of New Hampshire 72-67 late this afternoon. The game will take place in Binghamton at 11 a.m. Saturday.
On the tournament’s first day, senior forward Darryl Proctor was the standout, willing UMBC to victory with his 33 points and 11 rebounds in the first round of the America East Conference Tournament.
Sunday afternoon it was his senior teammate’s turn, and Greene did not disappoint. Greene added six assists to his 29 points after taking an 0-for-8 from the field against Boston University Saturday.
Said UMBC coach Randy Monroe on the UMBC athletics website: “Those guys [Proctor and Greene] have taken me on a fantastic ride. They just refuse to lose.”
The defending-champion Retrievers were the No. 6 seed heading into the weekend tournament.
