The Retrievers are struggling to make possessions count offensively when not in man-up situations, putting extra pressure on the UMBC defense and goalkeeper Jeremy Blevins. The Retrievers have already allowed only two fewer goals than the season high 10 goals allowed versus Rutgers.
Peet Poillon scored two goals in the second period, and Alex Hopmann added two in man-up opportunities, including one that came with only 21 ticks left on the clock that brought UMBC within two at 7-5.
But the Blue Jays responded by penetrating the defense and sneaking a goal past Blevins with six seconds remaining, ripping away any momentum the Retrievers may have seized.
It’s halftime now and the stands have filled in to about 75 percent capacity despite the thermometer reading 23 degrees, with a feels-like temperature of 16 degrees.
