Former UMBC official sentenced today
By: Greg Dewey -

George Alinsod, the former manager of construction services at UMBC, was charged today for bribery and fraud. He will serve concurrent three year prison terms and pay $206,069 in restitution to UMBC.

Alinsod would solicit bribes from contractors and subcontractors and steer construction projects to them. Once they had the contract they were allowed to inflate their bills to UMBC.

The Retriever Weekly reported the discovery of this corruption in early August.

whatthehell - February 24, 2009, 1:34 pm

really now.

really, georgie? really. - February 24, 2009, 3:05 pm

Well I’m glad to see he got what he deserved. I didn’t even know this had even happened. I guess stories released out of Spring/Fall semester months tend to get dropped off the radar.

I think that the fact that UMBC discovered this man’s crimes and that he was charged is more important than trying to make up another reason to crack on the school. UMBC could not have known that they were hiring someone who would turn out to take advantage of his job and it’s really unfair to blame them for that.

Hey J: Get off UMBC’s dick, and get a life. The School has fucked up again, and in reality is just another corporation, whose job is probably to try to educate us. In terms of hiring, they suck. Since their classes don’t seem to be too hot either, I think it’d be safe to say that this school kinda sucks.

There are obviously a lot of officials and departments that take bribes and are corrupt at UMBC….this kind of stuff has been going on for many years, from SGA to the Registrar’s to the Office of Undergraduate Education and more…

This is an eye opener for everyother person holding a position such as this.
Lets just do it right doesn’t cost much.

Are the students going to see any “RESTITUTION” in the form of a free book or two, a bbq or how about a legitimate performer or band during Quadmania?????

Big Nick - February 25, 2009, 11:32 am

I here that Nick! Who the hell is girl talk?

BAL89 - February 25, 2009, 2:03 pm

@big nick

how do you feel you deserve restitution? we still had to pay the same amount of tuition, regardless of this situation. they didn’t raise our fees. and if this hadn’t been exposed, you would never have known anything was wrong. were you inconvenienced? did you lose anything out of the deal? why do you feel you deserve something?

wut - February 25, 2009, 2:08 pm

girl talk is an awesome performer. if you’ve ever heard or seen him you know. i hope you will be surprised. avoid close minded questions in the future. look people up if you dont know.

talk girl - February 25, 2009, 7:21 pm

i would really like to know their idea of a legitimate performer…

yupyupuhhuh - February 25, 2009, 7:49 pm

seriously, why does everyone have to make up reasons to bitch at umbc for things that aren’t even within its control? it’s not like the guy had “swindler” on his resume somewhere. jeezous.

and girl talk is awesome. since when is yours the only “legitimate” opinion?

nirvanagrrl - February 25, 2009, 8:37 pm

@ BAL89
No, you don’t “here that,” you “hear that.” Have you ever considered that perhaps you ought to spend less time on forums bitching about things, and more time learning while you’re in school. Just a thought.

good lord… - February 26, 2009, 7:59 am

Hey talk girl- How about learning to spell and use some grammar skills that were taught during your elementary years? You’re in an Honors University, act like it.

talk girl sucks - February 26, 2009, 10:46 am

On a plus umbc has some good insiders who caught this so it couldn’t continue.. good work to those people …!

? - February 26, 2009, 1:23 pm

Talk girl did not make any spelling errors at all, and there were no grammar errors beyond omitting the use of capital letters. Assume it to be more shorthand than error.

O says: “There are obviously a lot of officials and departments that take bribes and are corrupt at UMBC….this kind of stuff has been going on for many years, from SGA to the Registrar’s to the Office of Undergraduate Education and more…” This is completely unfounded, which is why you don’t provide any concrete examples.

George Alinsod is a selfish greedy sneak, like the good majority of Americans. UMBC surely wouldn’t have hired him had they known his intentions.

But most importantly of all. Girl Talk is AMAZING, and you will love him. Everyone stop being so angry and go bake some cookies or something.

Nicholas Caminiti - February 26, 2009, 8:07 pm

It’s hilarious that the poster who insulted someone else for her grammar made several grammar mistakes himself.

Grammar Nazi - February 27, 2009, 8:30 am

News flash…UMBC is NOT an Honors University! It a public university WITH an Honors program. To wut said…can you try making a point with out using old, pathetic and rehashed talking points? Give me a break! Quit sounding like a helpless victim and grow a pair. What kind of logic says after being ripped-off…no harm no foul? I hope you keep them same attitude in the future if ever you’re tax dollars are misused, you’re somehow overcharged (like everyone else) or you catch someone stealing from you long after the fact.

BTW, a legitimate performer is someone at least currently residing in the Billboard top 100!

Big Nick - February 27, 2009, 8:56 am

Big Nick, you have no idea how ironic it is that you say that about Billboard’s top 100.

If you go to his performance, you’ll see why I say that.

T-Pain was in the Billboard top 100, wasn’t he? Was he good? I didn’t think so.

Seriously though, George Alinsod: old news. He has some time to think about the fact that what he did sucked.

GO TO THE GIRLTALK SHOW unless you don’t like having fun.

Nicholas Caminiti - February 27, 2009, 4:11 pm

This is a far more common occurance than you might believe. Contractors have always been a source corruption, it’s hard to avoid. My family recently had to deal with a contractor who took a lot of money and never built anything. We got nothing because twenty-six other people had already sued him.
