On Wednesday, UMBC looked to break their three-game losing streak by returning to the safe haven of the RAC Arena. The Retrievers were 8-1 at home coming into last night’s game. Their opponents were the Vermont Catamounts, who entered the game in third place in the America East.
The results were not what the crowd of 861 fans or team expected, though, as the Retrievers suffered a 73-49 loss at the hands of their conference foes.
“I’m embarrassed,” said Coach Phil Stern following the game. “I’m embarrassed by the way we played today. I’m embarrassed because we’ve been playing so well at home. I’m embarrassed that we didn’t give a better effort. They came in here and ran around our court like they were celebrating and having a good time out there and we just didn’t fight back.”
UMBC was done in on the boards, with Vermont holding a 45-35 rebound advantage, and a 38-14 edge in points in the paint. Also, Vermont was able to get 17 second chance points as a result of their rebounds.
A highlight for the Retrievers was Carlee Cassidy, who had 10 points in the game, reaching a UMBC women’s basketball milestone by connecting on her 169th three-pointer. The shot, which came with 9:10 left in the first half, gives Cassidy the all-time record in three-point shots made for the Retrievers.
Michelle Kurowski had 14 points and 9 rebounds, while Erin Brown had 12 points and 8 rebounds.
UMBC now stands at 12-11 overall and 4-6 in the America East, good enough for 6th place in the conference as of Thursday. The Retrievers will look to snap their four-game losing streak as they travel to Maine on Sunday to face the Black Bears, who have lost nine straight games as of Thursday.
