For real? Who the fuck is this guy? Is he the only one? Did we blow all of the money on this years quadmania last year on T-Pain?

I can’t lie, I’m pretty intrigued

Why is Walter Sondheim Smoking Cigarettes - February 5, 2009, 8:59 am

I love UMBC more than ever

Jessica - February 5, 2009, 9:31 am

This guy is legit. He tours around the world and is one of the best DJ’s in the world. He played Virgin Mobile Festival and it was amazing. This is a good pick for the quadmania but i rather have foo fighters

Greg - February 5, 2009, 1:20 pm

I remember when bands like All-American Rejects, Taking Back Sunday, Brand New, Alkaline Trio, and others were the norm for UMBC’s fall/spring concerts. Operative word being *concerts*. Is it right to even call Girl Talk a performer? I’ve heard his remixes, and they’re good. His last album, “Feed the Animals,” won several awards and was even named the #4 album of 2008 by Time Magazine. However, is this really going to be a good show or is it just going to be some rave/dance party? I’m skeptical. I liked when Quadmania culminated in a concert with a national act.

dave - February 5, 2009, 1:24 pm

Best. News. Ever.

Daniel - February 5, 2009, 1:46 pm

This is great news. Gregg Gillis aka Girltalk is a phenominal dj. I was looking forward to seeing him at Bonnaroo. I’m glad I won’t have to wait so long. Check out what he is all about at http://www.opensourcecinema.org

Gregory - February 5, 2009, 9:26 pm

why is it in the ballroom and not in the gym?

karrie - February 5, 2009, 9:44 pm

i don’t care what anyone else says, this is AMAZING. it’s nice to have someone who’s not so mainstream, and i actually didn’t expect something this good from umbc. i mean, after t-pain, it’s nice to have someone who isn’t constantly played on the radio. to whoever decided, thanks :)

Lianna - February 5, 2009, 9:54 pm

I agree with Dave… did regular performers with their own fully original albums jack up their prices so much that we can’t afford them anymore?

I know that with T-Pain they wanted a “change” from the typical rock/punk whatever… but this is getting to be a bit sad. I’d like to have a real concert for quadmania again.

Moo - February 6, 2009, 12:42 am

you know what we need? Get some black metal band in here. Not just one band, but at least 4 or 5. At the same time. I think that’d definitely be worth it.

And if this year’s act is worth the money, I might actually go to quadmania instead of sitting it out like usual…

…or not.

Shim - February 6, 2009, 9:58 am

Hurray. Another crap performer.

Anon - February 6, 2009, 11:19 am

I remember in my day we had Kanye West, NERD, Clipse, and Youngbloodz in one concert. WTF UMBC are u that broke? I know your asses make moolah on parking tickets alone…

me - February 6, 2009, 1:04 pm

Mash-up remixes of popular songs, eh… could we not afford someone who makes their own?

SS - February 6, 2009, 1:16 pm

I’m disappointed :-( This kind of music is good for certain situations, but a concert? The majority of people will probably be standing in the back looking confused.

Morgan - February 6, 2009, 2:22 pm

Now all we need to do is make Quadmania less family-oriented, and tailor the event more to the people that are PAYING to go here. Just because people in Arbutus have nothing to do shouldn’t mean that our poster event should become watered-down to accommodate the surrounding area. The first Quadmania I was present to attend (2006) was really well-organized, it was in the Quad (where it should be, and not lot 17), and even though it rained that day, it was still something to enjoy. Rockstar energy sponsored the event, the Commons was used as an intercultural food court, and everything was done right. UMBC fixed one huge problem with this campus already (the food), now they need to improve weekend life on campus, and especially improve on the banner event.

Daniel - February 6, 2009, 2:46 pm

I talked to someone from SEB a couple days ago. Girl Talk is the weekend after Quadmania. Theres still going to be the outdoor stage with alot of rock bands.

Shelly - February 6, 2009, 2:46 pm

The outdoor stage is usually local/smaller acts…the weekend after Quadmania?? The concert used to be the night OF Quadmania…I’m not here to judge before the event takes place, but I’m just having trouble seeing the logic there.

dave - February 6, 2009, 3:04 pm

Can’t they get Clutch or something?

Don’t Support Humanitary Aid by the Church - February 6, 2009, 3:09 pm

Void Fest at UMBC will be better and free…

Anal Cunt confirmed

Into the Void - February 6, 2009, 3:14 pm

My first reaction was, “Who is this guy?” And then I looked him up on youtube. I agree with many others and miss the days when Quadmania was THE event on campus, and we could bring big name acts for a great show. Unfortunately, I think SEB has become somewhat complacent and lost touch with the students here at UMBC. Although there are changes being made to try to fix that, there is still much that needs to be done. There was actually a lot of planning that went into this event, but I think the execution will leave something to be desired.

By the way, past Quadmanias have included the “Carnival” and concert for a price of $10. Word on the street is that this year prices will be different… yeah. So not only is the event in a smaller venue, but prices will be higher. Hmmmm… all this for a guy who doesn’t even play his own music.

There were a number of alternatives that were being considered, but again, SEB seems to have a mind of its own and didn’t bother to ask students who they would like to see. I understand that budget may be an issue, but couldn’t they have run a survey on MyUMBC with some reasonable choices in order to gauge the interests of the people who will be actually paying for this event?

This will be my last quadmania, as I am graduating this semester. It’s a shame that I won’t be in attendance. Hopefully things start to change for the better.

*end rant*

Too Square To Be Hip - February 6, 2009, 3:28 pm

I think that this will be a great change of pace for UMBC. Girltalk is going to provide a great sampling of music that a lot of people are going to appreciate. Every person here who says that this act came cheap is completely wrong. To those who retort that UMBC ‘wastes’ money on an act like Girltalk needs to man up and pay UMBC more of their hard earned money and maybe we’ll get some of the mainstream crap that isn’t worth 10% of what they charge.

Andrew - February 6, 2009, 3:49 pm

I know other schools in the area, mainly everyone’s favorite (sarcasm), Towson, polls their students on which acts they would prefer. They always pull together one hell of a show for Tigerfest, and the students feel like they were part of the planning. Maybe UMBC should take a hint and get back into the game, because the Quadmanias of the past sound excellent. Even though this is only my 2nd Quadmania, I definitely would like this one to be better than the last. The least that could happen is to move the show to the RAC, so the students can get involved in the show and have the hell of a time we deserve to have. Instead of packing a few hundred into the UC Ballroom, lets pack a couple thousand in the RAC and have a night for the ages.

Chillinandeatin - February 6, 2009, 5:20 pm

Ok, there is a lot of confusion going on here.

Girl Talk isn’t the Quadmania headliner, it is a separate concert the weekend AFTER Quadmania. They are finding someone else for the actual weekend of Quadmania. It’s in the Ballroom because Girl Talk’s concerts are basically one giant dance party, and usually ends with him taking off all his clothes and dancing on a table. Don’t believe me? Ask anyone who’s been to one of his concerts.

I think this is an EPIC choice for UMBC and I’m going to be first in line to get a ticket!

chelsea - February 6, 2009, 5:35 pm

THIS IS AWESOME! Girl Talk is amazing! I’ve seen Greg a few times and he’s made it big in the electronica world. You can compare him to Dan Deacon or someone like him. He mixes awesome songs that will keep you dancing for hours! It’s all different genres of music anything you can imagine! Usually his live shows are kickass and great! I bet it cost a lot of money for the school to get him because his shows are usually sold out!

Carley - February 6, 2009, 10:09 pm

“I remember in my day we had Kanye West, NERD, Clipse, and Youngbloodz in one concert”.. WHAT? WHEN WAS THIS? They had more than one performer and they were all HUGE? WOW… it looks like things are really going downhill.. Im going to attend the GirlTalk show b.c Im into that kind of thing and apparently his shows are really entertaining… but COME ON SERIOUSLY?!?! KANYE AND NERD AND CLIPSE? I hope quadmania isnt a rinky dink arbutus carnival again.. last year was SAD. Sorry but Tigerfest is INSANELY fun. As much as I dont want to say this because I really like it here, UMBC needs to see what they can do to make Quadmania more like Tigerfest because obviously Towson has it right!!

LE - February 7, 2009, 2:14 am

I am so going! I love them!

ger - February 7, 2009, 2:59 am

HELL YEAH!!!! This is actually going to the one reason I go to Quadmania. Girl Talk is something the world needs to hear. He samples from anything so that there is something for everyone. If you like new music and tired of mainstream stuff come see this show. Its gonna be amazing. And by the away ger, girl Talk is one person. }:-)

hey_i’m_indie - February 7, 2009, 4:39 pm

I am more than excited for Girltalk. I went to T-pain last year knowing I didn’t really like him… but it was an experience and I had a fun time with my friends. I do wish the venue could be different as I think a LOT of people will be in line for tickets… so the real question. . . WHEN CAN WE BUY TICKETS??????? Yea I will make sure to either be in that line mad early or have someone in line for me mad early (i’ll give them a space holder for me so it is like I am there when I’m not.

? - February 7, 2009, 6:18 pm

Kayne came slightly before Gold Digger got released and he got worldwide acclaim. Don’t act like UMBC used to book nationally renowned acts for Quadmania. Closest we’ve had was My Chemical Romance…

My BFF Jill - February 7, 2009, 6:42 pm

Really? Really? I thought the All American Rejects were a step down, then T-Pain came along. Now this? How about just having Adam Kurtz sing Frank Sinatra’s Greatest Hits?

Powell-Biden - February 7, 2009, 8:07 pm

Quadmania used to serve beer. Just saying. WAY back (10 years?). Now, we get a mini-Arbutus carnival in a parking lot and a DJ in the ballroom.

guy - February 8, 2009, 3:43 pm

my bro in law used to be on SEB about 6-7 years ago. back then, they were smart about it–they looked at all of the performers who were already in town doing shows at other venues then contacted them and offered some reasonable prices (for a big name like Kanye West, or Chuck D of Public Enemy, $20,000 is nothing, but if they’re already in town, from their point of view they might as well do it) and thus they good some good or at least renowned performers for some good concerts. Obviously thats not the strategy SEB uses anymore, as good as it was.

az - February 8, 2009, 5:34 pm

This is a pretty major step down. Girltalk probably only costs an exceptionally small amount compared to the acts we’ve had before, which is also why we are only tasking the ballroom instead of the RAC.

Maybe if we charged market rate for admission to the show, we coul have a really nice show at the RAC, but I guess UMBC doesn’t want to risk the capital

mark - February 8, 2009, 5:37 pm

Why can’t we get an actual band for once. I remember when our lady peace played and now we can get is tpain and girl talk… what a waste.. why not a band like the kooks or jack johnson bring back the glory days

Craig - February 17, 2009, 10:30 am

I’m excited for Girl Talk. So many people are uninterested in this guy before even hearing his music. He’ll play a little something for everyone!

TSizzle - February 25, 2009, 8:31 pm

Guys! Guys! Calm down and stop complaining! What the hell?!?

For those of you that are worried that Girl Talk will suck because you’ve never heard of him, click my name.

I’m sure that a lot of thought went into the planning of this event. There is no way to please everyone (and the way everyone is bitching, I wonder if there is a way to please anyone?), but Girl Talk is about as close as you are going to get to “something for everybody.” Honestly, I couldn’t think of a better choice of performers.

If you don’t like what he does, don’t go. There are plenty of other concerts elsewhere that you can go to instead. But seriously, enough with the “wahh wahh, I’m angry because they didn’t book Hinder and the Pussycat Dolls”

Do you realize what you are complaining about? These people went through all of the trouble to organize something JUST FOR YOU as a UMBC student, and you are acting like they are doing you a disservice. You all come off like fucking spoiled brats. Everything is awesome, and nobody is happy.

Nicholas Caminiti - February 27, 2009, 4:29 pm

You guys should have been around 6 yrs ago when Quadmania still kind of had actual bands around. My freshman yr they got Live and I think possible Silverchair to perform. My sophmore yr they had kind of blown their load and they just got Michelle Ndegeocello (who no one now remembers), junior yr might have been Third Eye Blind, and senior yr escapes me, but after Third Eye Blind, it seemed like it all went to hell. It’s a shame because Quadmania used to actually be a good time and it just seems like a waste of money.

KB - March 21, 2009, 8:14 am

yellowcard, my chemical romance, black eyed peas, kanye, nerd used to all come to umbc..

trust me, girl talk will be AMAZING. what i want to know is.. who’s going to be performing for quadmania? seb still hasn’t found a performer for quadmania? realllllly?

hollla - April 6, 2009, 10:23 pm

What about Natural Remedy. They’re a sick local band and they’re playing friday. You all should come out. Don’t forget about good music that you may not know about yet. Give it a chance! Have a good time!
