Chick-fil-A opens in the University Center
By: Kate Nunley -

At 8 a.m. on Monday, UMBC’s long-awaited Chick-fil-A began serving customers. The new location fielded long lines throughout most of the day with quick service considering the high volume of traffic. The quality of the food was on par with any other Chick-fil-A in the area, causing some students to purchase more than one meal there today.

The restaurant boasts breakfast items including Chicken Biscuits, Hash Browns and Chicken, Egg & Cheese served until 10:30 a.m. There are meal deals available for breakfast, lunch and dinner, which happily do not go over into flex dollars. From Monday to Thursday the food venue will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on Fridays from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

According to Tom DeLuca, Resident District Manager for Chartwells, approximately 1,000 customers had already been served at Chick-fil-A by 4 p.m. In addition, all the prices at the UMBC Chick-fil-A are the same as other off-campus locations. It is exciting to see quality food options on campus that are also affordable.  Overall, Chartwells had a successful start to the semester, also opening Mondo Subs and Famous Familglia Pizzeria.

I am incredibly proud of UMBC and Chartwells for listening to a lot of the concerns students had about whether the Chick-fil-a prices would be inflated. Being able to buy a real sandwich, fries and drink meal for the cost of a meal-plan meal completely made my day, and I know I will be returning to Chick-fil-a soon. My tip – go during scheduled class times to avoid a line; at 1:45pm I walked right up to the counter while at 1:50pm there was a wait.

I’m excited.. I think this will add some more “life” to the UC. :)

hey hey bay bay - January 26, 2009, 10:36 pm

@hey hey bay bay — TRW already provides plenty of excitement in the UC ;-)

Greg - January 26, 2009, 10:50 pm

Now let’s get a chipotle!

Mariano - January 27, 2009, 9:52 am

i second the chipotle

Ash - January 27, 2009, 12:48 pm

I think it would have been better if we had a full service chick fil a instead of an express. where’s the selection and brownies?

m y - January 27, 2009, 12:57 pm

I cant explain how happy I was to get a filling meal without using flex!

Alex - January 27, 2009, 1:28 pm

Awesome, but there still ain’t shit to eat on a sunday!!!

CatholicSir - January 27, 2009, 1:54 pm

Yes, we NEED Chipotle! Please bring them to the Commons!

Happy - January 27, 2009, 2:46 pm

chipotle FTW

alex - January 27, 2009, 3:22 pm

like all the ones before me and ones who will post after me, all for chipotle!

Ben - January 27, 2009, 4:01 pm

Wow. Took us this long just to get chick-fil-a and now everyone wants chipotle. No pleasing em.

Anon - January 27, 2009, 4:07 pm

As much as I like Chic-fil-A, I still regret about the place that they have used for it.

UC Study room was a quiet place where you could study and use a university computer WHILE eating. You could also sleep on those comfy sofas (I miss them). It was a place where you could get an experience for which you could kicked out if you had done it in library (like eating).

And now it is just another dinner. Why couldn’t you use Commons for it?

I am really disappointed with the PLACE UMBC picked :(

Good Food, Bad Place - January 27, 2009, 5:06 pm

yea!!! now all we need is a panera bread!!!!! and a subway………..

Danielle - January 27, 2009, 7:50 pm

and also the school had a chick fil a before a loooooooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnnnggggggggg time ago in the UC…..so its nothing new to some. and please, there are plenty of other places to study…………half of the time those computers in the uc froze anyway…..

Danielle - January 27, 2009, 7:52 pm

Chick-fil-A wins. The quality food and incredibly reasonable prices meet and exceed all expectations. The variety is somewhat lacking, but if it were any different the service would most likely be slower.

Overall, this seems to be a step in the right direction.

By the way, Salsrita’s Fresh Cantina’s quesadillas are vastly superior to the non-existent quesadillas served at Chipotle.

Anonymous - January 28, 2009, 2:00 am

The point was to try and get a lot of the heavy traffic out of the commons and spread to other buildings. The commons is insane during free hour, so this will help A LOT. I think it was a great decision.

anonymous - January 28, 2009, 8:18 am

I do love Chick-Fil-A but wish that they did not use MSG in their food. Chipotle :)

Ger - January 28, 2009, 12:37 pm

This is amazing, I’m glad it fits on the meal plan. Too bad no shakes or stripes though. The lines can also be amazing.

I veto the chipotle.

Anonymous - January 28, 2009, 1:04 pm

where is all the vegetarian food? at least the waffle fries are good.

CHIPOTLEEEEE.<3

smiley - January 28, 2009, 4:23 pm

This is not a vegetarian school. If you need vegetarian food, go somewhere else.

Fake Freeman Hrabowski - January 28, 2009, 5:22 pm

Love Chick Fil A but I agree, I’d eat Panera Bread more. I will give it to UMBC for finally having a place with some decent food. Meaning – not D grade meat. Gotta love my chick fil-a. Now lets get a decent sub place next! Hell, I’d settle for Subway, just make them change their couple of 5 dollar subs to all of them and we’d be set!

Austin G - January 28, 2009, 9:38 pm

Sugary sodas and trans fats are bad for you.

Sari - January 28, 2009, 11:56 pm

They’re not going to get a Chipotle when we have that stupid Salsaritas.

Yasmine - January 29, 2009, 9:09 am

I went there for the first time yesterday. The line was long, but it moved quickly, to my surprise (but that was yesterday at around 2 PM).

It’s a shame that the Grill and the Dining Hall are the ONLY things open on the weekends, still.

N - January 29, 2009, 11:39 am

smiley:

Who in their right mind goes to a chicken restaurant looking for vegetarian food?

SS - January 29, 2009, 2:04 pm

as I said if I was wrong I will stand corrected. Chick fil-a has turned out good as expect. Nice to know all the chartwell workers who had a bad attitude they took from behind to counter to the register. Now just keep the floors dry so I will not see my life flashing before my eyes and keep a logo outside because that would help.

Lets face reality here: the school’s food quality completely BLOWS! every single place here on campus serves the lowest quality food possible, and not to mention the service! if we get a chipotle it will be just as bad as everything else because after all, it IS UMBC. think about the facts. 1) salsaritas is the worst place ive ever ate at. however, im only talking about the one on campus. Ive been to a real salsaritas in baltimore before and it actually has pretty decent food (not chipotle quality of course, but not bad nonetheless). However, this school fucks it up. 2) its about the quality of the service. I go to chic-fil-a just about as much as anyone else here and I’ve had my share of very poor service. they routinely dont have drinks (dr pepper to be exact), they routinely dont have the sauces you want (bbq sauce), and they routinely disregard the student as a valued customer. Im talking about when you are 50th in line and you look up front and see there is ONE person at the register while there are two employees sitting and sipping on a coke watching the line struggle. I see SHIT quality ALL the time at this school. The grill COMPLETELY BLOWS. mondo’s sub? simply compare the food and service to something like it should be, like a subway. you’ll see its no comparison. salsaritas? see above. familiglia pizza place? compared to something like sbarro? no comment. dining hall? ive been to college park, towson, salisbury and a few other schools and BY FAR umbc has the WORST quality food and service. this will be the same if chipotle opens on campus. the only chance we have for a decent chipotle is if it opens somewhat off campus. in a similar place like the subway we have, that would mean that umbc wont be directly employing its workers. that is best case scenario.

Reality - April 27, 2010, 10:30 am

Its great that UMBC now has a chickfila but the people working there are not clear on what they are doing…I was charged 44.63 on a meal that was 4.63 and was told that it was voided and have yet to get my money back. Be careful

Irum - September 24, 2010, 10:13 am

How about a Chipotle on campus?
