Billick making UMBC visits common practice
By: Alex Pyles -

Sitting three rows behind the Retriever bench at last night’s men’s basketball game versus Towson was former Super-Bowl winning Baltimore Ravens coach Brian Billick.

This is the second visit Billick, who now is part-owner (with founder Nestor Aparicio) of sports-based radio station/website WNST in Baltimore, has made to the UMBC campus in that last month. At halftime of the Retriever loss, Billick was out on the court taking shots.

Is there a relationship budding between Billick and the university?

If so, that’s good news for UMBC. Billick is a strong personality and will always have a niche in the Baltimore community because he helped bring an upstart NFL team to prominence. Billick is also building a national brand for himself with his work on FOX Sports and the NFL Network.

Not to mention those beer commercials.

At Billick’s talk a few weeks back, Dr. Hrabowski mentioned Billick was being added to the UMBC Board of Visitors, though the website has not been updated in reflection of that announcement.

If we ever get a football team in the near future, could he possibly be our first head coach?

You can also view the video of Billick’s performance at WNST.net or on youtube, where there are a ton of videos of WNST and UMBC.

Is it possible that Billick is the one to bring a football team to UMBC
——————————————–
I wouldn’t count on it. Dr. Hrabowski is pretty set in his opinion on this one, and he’s not wrong; there’s no reason to go adding an expensive football program when UMBC is only just now starting to have success in the other “main event” sport, basketball. If the basketball team continues to compete well and a new arena is built somewhere on campus, then perhaps the money that can be earned through season ticket sales could help start a football program. But until that happens — and it’s more than a decade away — there’s no way to start a football program without bankrupting the other teams. Brian Billick alone can’t fund a successful football program at UMBC. –Alex

We’re not getting a football team…ever.

No need for a football team at UMBC. I’m a huge football fan but it’s way to expensive to start now. When Towson and Maryland started football teams it was fairly cheap, and it’s easier to keep a program than start one. In football you have to scholarship at least three line deep, and in total around 50 athletes. Thats way too much money that the athletic department doesn’t have. If they want a team then they would either have to match all of that money on the women’s side (which we don’t have) or they would have to excessively cut funding and prgrams from the men’s side. Seeing that UMBC is almost at the bare minimun in athletics there is nothing worth cutting.
