There have been rumors swirling around about President-elect Obama’s choice for Secretary of Education with UMBC president Freeman Hrabowski rumored to be in the running. However UMBC spokesman Mike Lurie has indicated that President Hrabowski “has no interest”. Lurie also said that “[Hrabowski is] quite happy at UMBC and not interested in that option as a next stop.”
This both good and bad news for UMBC. If Hrabowski stays it means that he can continue to innovate and improve the university as he has been doing for years. However if he had been chosen UMBC students would have known that a powerful voice for higher education would be in power.
We can still hope that one of the other names mentioned for the position such as Arne Duncan, Colin Powell, Linda Darling-Hammond, Joel Klein, and Michael Lomax will be a strong choice to help education in the United States.
