AIDS awareness and free testing

National AIDS Awareness Day is this Monday, December 1st. The Social Work Student Association is sponsoring free HIV tests at the Commons on 12/1 or 12/4 between 1:00p.m. and 5:00 p.m. I haven’t seen much advertisement regarding free HIV testing, so I want to get the word out that it’s occurring. The testing is convenient, anonymous, and free, so please get tested for your sake (and the sake of others).

In 2007, there was an estimated 2.7 million people newly infected with HIV, and 33.2 million living with the virus, according to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services. Do your part to prevent the spread of AIDS and get tested for free.

Also tonight there’s a benefit party in the UC Ballrom at 8PM. Admission is free and there will be a DJ, step show, and food. Money raised will be donated to a local HIV/AIDS charity in Baltimore city.

The NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt is on display in The Commons throughout the week. For those of you not familiar with the AIDS Quilt, it was started in the late 1980s and now contains more than 45,000 panels. Each panel represents a person who has died from AIDS. The quilt is the largest piece of communal art in the world. It was last displayed in its entirety in Washington DC in 1996. Pieces of the quilt were displayed as part of President Clinton’s inaugural parade.
