Basketball loses to Morgan State, but Greene new record-holder
By: Alex Pyles -

UMBC failed in its quest to go 2-0, falling to cross town opponent Morgan State 67-60. Don’t despair; the east-siders have a pretty decent program.

Remember, Morgan State went 22-11 last season and won the MEAC regular season crown. Only a loss to Coppin State in the MEAC tournament title game prevented Morgan State from fighting their way into the NCAA Tournament.

Just like UMBC, Morgan State lost three starters from last season and returned two. All this loss means is that Morgan State has more effectively replaced their losses two games into the season.

Of course, the big news is that Jay Greene moved past Dana Harris to become UMBC’s all-time assists leader.

Greene has been dishing the ball out with authority since the second half of his freshman season, and it’s been fun to watch him morph from freshman role player into the top point guard in the America East Conference.

They need work. And the bench needs to be developed more. You were right in saying that Morgan State had the better replacement plan, seeing as how their bench accumulated 20 points compared to our 11.

But I do have hope that they’ll get better as time progresses. It may not be a mind blowing NC season, but as long as they do well come conference time, I’ve got no big issues.
