RateMyProfessors.com’s top ten list
By: Alex Pyles -

MTVU’s ratemyprofessors.com, the popular website where college students can review instructors at their college or university, will soon be releasing a list of the top ten professors in the country, based partially on student ratings.

The full list is embargoed until later this week — meaning it can’t be released yet by the media — but I can tell you that one slot is claimed by a professor at UMBC.

Who do you think it is?

I don’t know about the rest of the faculty/professors here at UMBC, but if I had to guess from the ones that I have had, I would pick Dr. Jeffrey Davis.

I know Dr. Davis made the the list of best professors to take while at UMBC. While having multiple classes with Dr. Davis, I can speak from experience when I say that he is one of the best professors at UMBC. Hands down.

Whether you agree with Dr. Davis’ views or not, he challenges you to think judiciously and academically and forces you to present your side of any argument clearly and effectively.

If you go through ratemyprofessor you can search by different criteria, if you search for overall quality you get a lot of professors at umbc with a 5 rating but they don’t have very many people evaluating them. If you go by number of voters and then rank the professors with a high number of voters by overall quality Jim Thomas wins.

Jim Thomas
57 Ratings
4.9 Overall Quality

Other professors are close but he’s still got the best chance by their system in my opinion. (makes me wish i had taken him!)

OH yea - November 18, 2008, 3:28 pm

Mason? Really? Who the hell said Mason? He is by far not the best teacher in this school.

I would say James Grubb, however.

Feanor - November 18, 2008, 4:14 pm

definately Loviglio

SM - November 18, 2008, 4:29 pm

I think its kind of interesting that you at the Retriever are “stealing” a subject from the UMBC Underground. C’mon…that’s just bad journalism (if TRW could actually be called a journalistic enterprise). The UU did this feature a few days ago…coincidence that you are covering a similar story? I think not. Lazy “reporters” at TRW…
——————————————–
Editor’s Note: The feature you’re referring to is asking readers to identify professors to take for the spring semester. TRW’s post is commentary on an upcoming news story — RateMyProfessors.com’s Top Ten list, to be announced later this week — which is a distinctly different topic.

Loviglio is awesome. He’s probably not it, but he certainly deserves to be. Far and beyond my favorite professor at UMBC.

Gary Burt was the best teacher :)

I agree… it most likely is Professor Davis. If it isn’t, it is a crying shame! He is everything a student could hope for in a college experience.

SCHALLER!!!

Forbes - November 19, 2008, 8:43 am

I would like to note… Resta? I mean, yeah, all his talk of Aliens and the Devil on the first day of class about halved the size of the class and got rid of the people who were not serious about the material, but other than that, I think most people would be against him because of his utter hatred of Blackboard. He told us pretty much on a weekly basis that he wouldn’t use blackboard because his daughter had used it to justify never going to class.

Also, Richard Mason is an amazing teacher. I have had him several semesters in a row and actually will have him for 2 classes this spring. I absolutely love taking his classes. He’s incredibly entertaining, you just have to get him on the right topic. Like Aristophanes. Then he kicks into overdrive and decides to spend 15 minutes discussing the merits of a 4 letter word beginning with the letter F. Or the day he was discussing the Egyptian god Min and was disappointed no one noticed the odd features of the carving, so we all learned the definition of ithyphallic.

If you want a professor who lives and breathes only the topic of the class, I would also nominate Dr. Tyson King-Meadows (and I know many people will kill me for this one). He is not a bad guy. Yes, he moves quickly and treats even 100 level classes like it’s a 300 or 400 level class, but if you do the work, it’s not difficult to get a good grade in his class and you gain a level of understanding from integrating the material and building upon it, not just learning a bunch of definitions. I’ve taken several political courses over my academic career, but I’ve never understood politics as well as I do now for having taken a class with him.

Congrats to the guy who mentioned Jim Thomas, he might just have made it, but I doubt enough people are taking PHIL courses to get him up that high. Were it up to me Dr. Braude and/or Dr. Wilson would be on there too.
