How do you feel about Governor O'Malley's proposed three percent tuition increase for USM students?

It is too much to ask of students.
It is understandable, but I’d rather not pay for it.
It is a great way to fund the University System of Maryland during a time with budget cuts.
I don’t know enough about it to have an opinion on the subject.

Men's Basketball Preview

#1 Bakari Smith- 6'3", 190lbs

Though he only averaged less than one point per game last year Smith took part in 13 contests with a start. This junior guard is a very physically matured athlete that averaged 12.0 p.p.g., 5.0 r.p.g., and 5.0 a.p.g. two season ago at Baltimore City Community College.

#3 Jamar Wertz- 6'4", 185lbs

Last season as a senior in high school Wertz lead King's Fork High School to a 31-1 record and a State Championship while averaging 14.2 p.p.g., 6.0 r.p.g., and 2.3 s.p.g. The slasher was named Second-Team All-State following his 2008-2009 campaign.

#5 Nick Groce- 5'11". 175lbs

The Upper Marlboro native is expected to see some time at point guard this year after leading the Saint Mary's Gales to the MIAA "B" Conference title with a 26 point performance and game-winning layup in the RAC arena. He averaged 13.6 p.p.g. and 3.6 a.p.g last year and earned Second-Team All-Metro and All-County honors as a senior.

#10 Chris De La Rosa- 5'10", 170lbs

A sophomore transfer from Siena who will be eligible to play after sitting the 2008-2009 season out. Though he only averaged 2.5 p.p.g. and 1.5 a.p.g. while at Siena, he possesses good quickness and ball handling ability and is expected to make a big impact at the point guard position.

#15 Robbie Jackson- 7'0", 280lbs

One of two transfers expected to make a big impact for the Retrievers this year, the junior who played at Marshall from 2006-2008 is a big body that the America East has never seen the likes of before. He provides a much needed interior presence that will sure up the team's defense and rebounding and because of his size he is a mismatch on offense for any opposing player he will see in conference play.

#20 Adrian Satchell- 6'5" 195lbs

Satchell enters his freshman season with a very impressive high school resume. After averaging 13.0 points, 8.9 rebounds, and 1.8 shots during his senior year while shooting 55% from the field he lead Windsor High School to a 26-1 record and State Championship. He was named a McDonald's All-American nominee, a two time All-State selection, three-time All-Conference honoree, and was ranked sixth in the class of 2009 in the state of Connecticut by New England Recruiting Report.

#21 Matt Spadafora- 6'5", 200lbs

A two year starter is back for his senior campaign after averaging a career high 8.2 p.p.g., 3.8 r.p.g., and 2.4 a.p.g. He was third in the conference in assist-to-turnover ratio in league games at 2.2 and proved to be a big time clutch free-throw shooting as he hit 28 of 32 (87.5%) in the final five minutes of games.

#23 Chauncey Gilliam- 6'5", 235lbs

Though he'll miss the first half of the season with off the court issues, Gilliam should have a big time impact once he hits the court. Last season as a freshman he averaged 10.0 p.p.g. and 4.4 r.p.g. while shooting 51.4% from the field as the team's third option. He lead the Retrievers with 21 points in a ig upset over Big 12 foe Nebraska and in the final 10 games last season he developed his three point shot going 17-33 (51.5%) from beyond the arc.

#23 Shawn Grant- 6'4", 180lbs

A late signee but one that the basketball team will be happy to have. During his senior campaign he averaged 15.5 point, 5.6 rebounds, and 2.0 assists and was names the West Coast Athletic League Player of the Year by the San Jose Mercury News and Palo Alto Daily News while leading his high school team to it's 10th Central Coast Section title and Division II Northern California Championship.

#30 Justin Fry- 6'9", 220lbs

A knee injury will keep him sidelined for the first half of the season but will be expected to return to his starting role, which he has had for each of his three seasons at UMBC, once he comes back. Last season he recorded career highs in both points (8.1) and rebounds (4.7) with three double-doubles including a 19 point and 10 rebound performance in a first round upset of Boston University in the Conference Tournament.

#31 Brian Neller- 6'4", 185lbs

Another freshman who is expected to see a big role this year, Neller earned Shore Conference Player of the Year honores by both the coaches and The Asbury Park Press in 2008-2009 after averaging 14.2 p.p.g. and leading his team to a Conference Championship. He scored 1,119 points in his career and 178 three-point field goals in a three-year varsity with a career high of 69 coming in his senior campaign.

#34 Jake Wasco- 6'8", 235lbs

In his freshman season he played in 19 games and started one. Though he only averaged 1.0 p.p.g. and 1.5 r.p.g. he showed good footwork on the defensive end. Last year he was limited time due to early fatigue which led to quick foul trouble, but in the off-season he added 25 pounds of muscle and should see a significant boost in playing time and be much better both offensively and defensively because of it.
