Blazed and Confused tour takes over Merriweather
"Everyday is a special day," said Julian Marley backstage, "we get to listen to the music of Snoop Dogg, Slightly Stoopid and Stephen Marley- and every night is like a specialty in atmosphere." Blazed and Confused 2009 kicked off July 10th in Las Vegas for a US tour hitting 20 major cities around the nation. In early August, the tour made its Maryland debut at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia. The tour is carrying with it the godfather of rap himself, Snoop Dogg, the legendary Stephen Marley, as well as the reggae-punk infused band Slightly Stoopid, all as headliners. The diversity of the tour is topped of with the presence of Mickey Avalon as the opening act."The tour kind of speaks for itself," said Miles Doughty, lead singer and guitarist of Slightly Stoopid. "We were doing this promo video for the tour with Snoop Dogg and they had this prop herb, and Marley says, ' Yo, how am I supposed to get inspiration from dis when I live in fields of weed?'" laughed Miles as he tries to imitate Marley's Jamaican accent. The tour of course boasts its' sinsemilla influences with marijuana leaf decorations covering the entire stage for every act as well as quick mentions from every artists on stage. "So, who's blazing!" yelled Miles during his set as the last act of the night. The idea for the tour came from Slightly Stoopid who had Snoop Dogg on their wish list of artists to tour with in the summer. Luckily for them, their agent happened to know Snoop's agent and somehow Stephen Marley just fell into place. "I mean Stephen Marley is ridiculous, I think that's the closest you'll ever see to Bob Marley. I mean he really sounds like his dad, and he's a genius, he produces a lot of music and writes some really dope stuff. And Mickey Avalon is just nuts, so its rad," added Miles. Slightly Stoopid's Trumpet player, C-Money, described his band's style as a myriad of things, something that can't even really be described. "I like to call it social music. That's what Miles Davis said, that music that brings people together," he said while pointing to the backstage outdoor scenery of Merriweather: an area outfitted with tiki lamps and island decorations in addition to a basketball court and open bar next to a pond surrounded by woods. " This place is sick," said a fan that wandered backstage with an all access pass, " I was just playing ping pong with the Marley kids!" Mickey Avalon's new album off Interscope Records is expected to be released by the end of the year with a single coming in mid August. But Avalon is not the only one on the tour coming out with an album soon though; Stephen Marley mentioned that Julian Marley will also be dropping an album in October, and Slightly Stoopid is hoping to record and have an album out in 2010 as well. After a quick word with Snoop Dogg, it is apparent that he is also coming out with a new album called Alice in Wonderland in November as well as a movie of the same name. The Blazed and Confused 2009 tour finished up August 8th in Boston. If you didn't catch the tour you really missed out. As C-money put it, " When I first saw Snoop come up on stage and do 'G's and Hustlers,' I jut thought, uh, I can cross that off my list of things to do before I die."
