Why Bush is the worst president in history
President George Bush has for a long time said that history will be his judge, and while Ol' G.W. is right in this assumption, history will most likely waterboard any shred of respect left. While he still has a year left in which to start a new war or drive the country further into debt, historians are already weighing in on the legacy of Mr. Bush. And just how does he fare in the eyes of historians? To put it nicely, not well.
While it isn't proper procedure to question the full weight of a president's term while he is still in office, it's safe to say Bush's presidency isn't going to win any awards or rouse any fanatics. He certainly won't get any accolades from his historian counterparts. According to a recent poll conducted by the History News Network, 98 percent of historians would categorize George W. Bush's presidency as a failure. To add insult to injury, 61 percent of historians surveyed felt that Bush's first seven years were not only bad, but such a catastrophe to make him the worst president in history. Of the other 39 percent of historians surveyed, 35 percent believe that Bush is not the worst but among the worst, ranked in the bottom 10 presidents. Presidents before Bush who have shared the title of worst president ever have included James Buchanan, Millard Fillmore, Franklin Pierce, and Andrew Johnson.
This shouldn't be shocking or surprising to anyone, and if you happen to find this surprising, you should wear a bike helmet, always. His latest approval rating was 28 percent. To get a feel of just how low that is, consult the website imdb.com. People approve of Halle Barry's Catwoman more than they approve of President Bush. If President Bush's presidency was a movie, it would roughly be on par with Baby Geniuses 2. Isn't that sad? One can argue that wartime presidents rarely have good approval ratings, but Bush's approval rating has been absolutely abysmal. It hasn't seen the up side of 50 percent since December 2004.
But Bush wasn't voted "most triumphant at sucking," squarely on his approval rating; his screw-ups are as numerous as they are putrid. Since there isn't enough room in this paper to cover them all, let's just cover the major offenses. George W. Bush lied about torture only to have the truth come to light. Our reputation worldwide has spun the drain courtesy of el Presidente. Under the sunshine of President Bush, the economy has turned to rot, which also happened to New Orleans thanks to the president's timely reaction. And who can forget Bush's dancing around the constitution to implement his NSA wiretapping program? But the cherry on top of this sundae bloody sundae is the War in Iraq, the lying that put us there, and the quagmire that has thus resulted.
As for the survey itself, it has faults in the procedure in which the historians were chosen, and in the fact that historians are asked to judge a presidency that isn't over. But even with these blemishes, I believe the survey paints accurately the present view of Bush and the view of him in the future. Only after his final term will we be able to give his presidency and his legacy the respect it deserves.
