Women's soccer wins first season opener in 12 years

By Corey Johns

For the first time since 1998 the women's soccer team walked away from their season opener with a victory. That victory came against Delaware State of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, a team that UMBC defeated last year. The women's soccer team scored four goals in the first half of the game en route to their 4-1 win over the Hornets, and leading the way were seniors Sandra Vacarino and Christina Sadowski. Vacarino, who led the team in scoring in 2009 with four goals and two assists, scored a goal and added an assist, which accounted for the game's first two goals, ... Read More

Corey's Corner: Five bold predictions

By Corey Johns

My five bold predictions have been in different forms the last two years, but this time since it is in Corey's Corner I can say the world "I". Last year was for the most part a down year for UMBC athletics, but there was a lot that happened that gave UMBC hope of winning some championships this year. They were also able to get junior Lauren Leclercq from the women's track and field team at UMBC to join the cross country team. The team also has two returning seniors, Captain Sara Parkinson and Cortney ... Loaded men's soccer team has a chance to break 10-year championship drought

By Corey Johns

What happens when you have a soccer team that made it all the way to the conference championship game, returns every single key player from that squad, and brings in a load of both experienced and high quality talent? You have a soccer team with really high expectations the next season.Even though the team was picked to finish third in the preseason coaches poll behind Boston University and reigning champion Stony Brook University, UMBC very well could be a team that raises the trophy come November, and advances to their first College Cup since 1999.But the team's coach, Pete Caringi, ... Men's cross country fields largest team in school history

With the largest freshman class in the program's history, the men's cross country team has reason to be hopeful that they will finish higher than eighth place in the nine team conference, which is where they wound up in 2009.Coach Matt Gittermann will welcome nine new men to the team this season after losing just two seniors last year. That will make this season's team the largest in the programs history."I can't help but to be excited by this incoming class," Gittermann said.
