Women's Lacrosse comes up just shy of first ever AEC Championship

The women's lacrosse team was riding high after their 11-9 America EastTournament semi-final win against Albany two days ago. About 2,000 attend the 14th annual URCAD in the UC

On Wednesday, February 28, UMBC held its 14th annual Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement Day (URCAD). The vast amount of presentations made the event highly informational. "This is the first time URCAD spilled over onto the second and third floor of the University Center," said an excited Janet McGlynn, Director of Communication and Outreach. Disciplines represented included video games, music, literature, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and, for the first time, virtual reality.About 2,000 people attended URCAD this year compared to 1,300 last year. Princeton Review names UMBC as among the greenest colleges

As well as having been recognized as one of the nation's best value colleges, The Princeton Review has acknowledged UMBC's efforts at being environmentally friendly by including them in their guide to the 286 greenest colleges in America.The guide is the first example of literature dedicated to informing readers about higher education institutes and their dedication to environmental awareness. The review judged schools on, among other things, their commitment to environmental literacy programs, formal sustainability committees, use of renewable energy resources, and conservation on campus. Students raise $11,392 in second annual Relay for Life event

With one in three Americans being diagnosed with cancer at some point in their lifetime, UMBC students have embarked on Relay For Life event, raising money for cancer research charities.With over 300 participants and 45 teams across campus, students raised $11,392 in the April 23 event on campus, with all funds being used to fight one of Americas biggest killers, second only to heart disease.As entertainment chair of the event, Ben Davis faced a slight panic when the time of the event was changed. UMBC's Chess Team wins 2010 President's Cup

On April 11, UMBC's Chess Team won the "Final Four of College Chess" at the 2010 President's Cup, a record sixth win. According to Sergey Erenburg, UMBC's team captain, this Final Four ranks among the strongest events in collegiate chess history. Though competition usually remains stiff, this year's tournament boasted three particularly strong teams from Texas: Texas Tech University; the University of Texas, Dallas; and the University of Texas-Brownsville (UTB). Budget Cuts Affect Research Funding

Ever since Governor O'Malley implemented budget cuts, Maryland universities have scrambled to make adjustments in utilities such as classes and awards. Aside from lessening faculty morale, UMBC has not suffered much impact, according to Vice President of Research, Dr. Geoffrey Summers. The university receives most of its research funding from other sources besides the state. NASA is one of the school's biggest federal research sponsors. It dispersed a total of $88, 700,000 in the past year to the university. In fact, UMBC remains in the top 2-3 universities in the country that receives grants from NASA. The funds support UMBC's ... Double Celebration for the Statistics Faculty at UMBC

On April 22-24, 2010, UMBC's Statistics Faculty proudly celebrated their 4th Annual Probability and Statistics Day, as well as the Silver Jubilee of the Statistics Graduate Program. The program was founded by Dr. Bimal Sinha in the fall of 1985. After spending 10 years at the University of Pittsburgh, Dr. Sinha teamed up with Dr. Thomas Mathew, also from the University of Pittsburgh, and Professor Keith Crank from Purdue University to develop the program.
